HAMPSHIRE openers Michael Carberry and Jimmy Adams navigated a tricky period of batting through until lunch on day one to thwart Yorkshire at the Ageas Bowl.

Overnight rain delayed the start of play in the County Championship contest until 11am, with Andrew Gale opting to bowl first upon winning the toss.

Only 20 runs came off the first 17 overs bowled on a green-looking pitch, with 17-year-old new-ball seamer Matt Fisher sending down four maidens in his opening six-over spell.

Runs have come more freely since, with the left-handed pair taking the score to 55-0 after 26 overs. Carberry resumes this afternoon on 27 and Adams 22.
