Mick Potter has warned Wigan that confidence among his players is sky-high as the Bulls bid to cause a major upset tomorrow.

Potter’s men kick-started their campaign in stirring fashion at Castleford last weekend, repelling wave after wave of attacks to grind out an attritional 20-12 victory.

It was the perfect response to their opening-day defeat at the hands of Catalan Dragons at Odsal, where Bradford will now seek to topple a Wigan side laden with stars.

Potter said: “We’ve taken a lot of confidence from what we did defensively at Castleford and we’re quite capable of getting a result this weekend.

“We’ll just need to apply that method in attack as well because Wigan are a hard team to break down.

“But they’re not unbeatable, as Huddersfield showed in the opening round. Some people look at Wigan and think ‘they’ve won a million trophies, they’ve been at the top for the last couple of years and been very tough to beat.’

“But they’re on the same pitch as us for 80 minutes and it’s about who performs the best in those 80 minutes.”

The Warriors’ squad is awash with big-name players such as Sam Tomkins, Thomas Leuluai and Brett Finch, while rookie winger Josh Charnley scored a fine hat-trick in last weekend’s win over Leeds.

Potter added: “The likes of Sam Tomkins, Pat Richards, Sean O’Loughlin and Thomas Leuluai are all exceptional players.

“Throw the smartness of Brett Finch in there, and the toughness of Michael McIlorum at hooker, as well as their big forwards, and you can see their strength.

“Josh Charnley is quick, and he scored some nice tries last week, but it’s more about what we do in the middle, then we can focus on the edges.

“Him not getting the ball is probably the key for us.

“We need to be aggressive in our defence and account for those people inside Charnley.

“We want to win the game and that’s what we’ll be trying to do.

“I’m sure the players will do their best and put in a good performance but we want two points.

“I’m expecting a real battle, and it’s certainly not a given that Wigan are going to come over and take points off us.

“They will need to work extremely hard.

“They’ve got a good solid team and a couple of exceptional players.

“We need to account for those and make sure that we’re on our game.

“We can’t have a lapse in concentration at all because they have players who will burn you.”

Potter will aim to keep changes to a minimum as he looks to build on last weekend’s victory.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Adrian Purtell will miss the next six weeks due to a chest injury.

James Donaldson is due to undergo a scan on Monday as he awaits the prognosis on a knee injury sustained at Castleford.

But Keith Lulia is in contention to make his long-awaited debut in the centres after recovering from a hamstring tear.

Manase Manuokafoa is also approaching full fitness after a knee problem.

Potter added: “Keith will be out for six weeks and we all hope that James’ injury isn’t a bad one, just a short-term one.

“James is a very good defender, he’s got great feet and good hands, which he showed last week at Castleford.

“On the plus side, Manase is close to coming back, as is Keith Lulia.

“There won’t be many changes this weekend.

“There are two reasons why you make changes – injuries or non-performance.

“At this stage of the season you like to build some consistency and you give players the benefit of the doubt.

“They either stay in the team or you have to give someone else a go.”

John Bateman is on the road to recovery but Potter still has a number of other players sidelined by injury.

He added: “Adam O’Brien is probably still three weeks away with his ankle.

“Tom Olibson’s shoulder injury is a three-month job and he will be back in mid-April, while Olivier Elima should return in mid-March following his knee clear-out.

“I think he’s going to commence jogging next week.”
