A successful scouting mission paid off after the Bulls added another young talent to their academy system.

Having missed out on the main academy intake, James Slater was spotted at the Rugby Football League’s Festival of Rugby in Sheffield and agreed terms this week.

A stand-off from Wakefield side Westgate Wolves, Slater initially missed out on a professional contract as he had not been involved in a Super League club’s scholarship scheme.

But, acting on a tip-off, player performance manager Stuart Barrow kept a close eye on Slater at last month’s festival and the club decided to make a move.

Head of youth development Paul Medley said: “Stuart attended the RFL’s Festival of Rugby in Sheffield early last month, initially to look at players for our under-15s scholarship – for which we signed four juniors – and to watch James, who had been recommended to us by several people as being a player with potential.

“He had not been on a scholarship scheme so had not been signed along with other players of his age.

“Stuart watched the whole of the under-16s game and was impressed with James’ ability and we were able to agree a contract with him.

“We are absolutely delighted to have him on board with us and he will join our other under-16s signings in being available for selection for the rest of the season.”
