BULLS operations manager Russ MacFarlane is pleased the dual-registration agreement with Widnes will relieve the burden on the club's young talent.

A total of 11 academy players have been used this season and the 60-4 defeat at Toulouse featured what is believed to be the youngest-ever side fielded in Bradford's history.

It has been invaluable experience for them but four defeats in a row – albeit to some of the Championship's top sides – has highlighted the need to take at least some of them out of the firing line.

Widnes props Ted Chapelhow and Sam Brooks were drafted in for the Sheffield Eagles clash and more Vikings are expected to be used in the weeks ahead.

MacFarlane said: "The dual-reg partnership with Widnes will mean we don't have to rely so heavily on the young players. They can come and get experience but not be relied on so much.

"It's great that we have got these youngsters but I wouldn't be wrong in saying we have probably used a couple too many – but it's still great experience for them."

The capture of four Leeds Rhinos players on loan for a month has also added to the Bulls' options in the short term but a strong focus remains on developing youth at Odsal.

MacFarlane said: "It's great for the future of the club. John Bastian and Leigh Beattie are doing a great job with everyone else who is working in the academy.

"Everyone is so proud of them. More players are coming through and we've identified a few already for next season who will be able to come into the first-team squad."

Meanwhile, the Bulls are hoping a blank weekend due to the Challenge Cup will help them reduce their injury list for their next game at home to London on Sunday, May 21.

James Bentley is hoping to return after a spell out with a broken finger, Ross Peltier should be available again for selection after eight weeks out with a broken right hand and Jon Magrin is likely to be okay after suffering concussion.

Centres James Mendeika and Ross Oakes will be assessed after both picked up ankle injuries but Lee Smith (knee) is still sidelined and will not be fit.

Prop Scott Moore could be available after suffering an Achilles problem. Moore is due to appear at Bolton Crown Court on Wednesday, May 24 in connection with six charges following a police pursuit in Leigh which led to his arrest last October. He was on the books at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at the time.
