IF Odsal has become a home for ex-London players, then the same can be said of the Broncos welcoming Bradford men into the fold.

London boss Andrew Henderson has signed Adrian Purtell, Jay Pitts and Jarrod Sammut ahead of next season while Jamie Langley is the club’s Under-19s coach.

The Bulls, for their part, have recruited Broncos trio Iliess Macani, Jon Magrin and Alex Foster on two-year deals, adding to the number of former London players in Rohan Smith’s squad.

Head coach Henderson said: “I offered Iliess a deal earlier in the season at a time when he had aspirations to play in Super League.

“We moved on then as a club and he obviously secured a deal at Bradford. Jon Magrin was a player we obviously wanted to retain but he got offered a better deal at Bradford.

“He just said he wanted a different challenge, having come through the London system and been at the club for a long time.

“Alex Foster was a little bit different in that he wanted to return north to family where his partner is based. As a coach in London, these are some of the things you are faced with I’m afraid.

“They have joined the Bradford club and I’ve got nothing but good things to say about all three players.

“Magrin and Macani have got a lot of potential and are still learning and developing as players.

“I’m sure Rohan can further their progression and get the best out of them.

“Foster is a great professional and a really good all-round kid.

“In terms of his ability, he’s a fantastic player and I see him as a back-rower who can also play centre if needed.”

Margin and Macani grew up in London whereas Foster is a Yorkshire lad who first made his name at Headingley with Leeds.

Henderson added: “There is no reason why they can’t be in Bradford’s regular 17 each week – they certainly have the ability.

“Macani still has a lot of work to do as a player but I’ve seen a massive progression in the 18 months I’ve worked with him and I’m proud of that.

“He’s got good speed, agility and he’s a good finisher, plus he’s a decent person as well, so I’m confident he can kick on.”

Henderson guided London to a second-placed finish in the Championship last season and further progress is expected.

“We were written off at the start of the year and didn’t expect to go as well as we did,” he said.

“I was very pleased that we secured a top-two finish and then competed very well in the middle eights.

“But the reality is that we need to be better next year and what I’ve done is recruit players who I believe are going to add a bit more value to the team.

“We have retained the guys we hope can kick us on and the players we’ve recruited for next year should give us a bit more of a lift.

“Every player I’ve brought in has experienced Super League and Championship whereas that wasn’t the case last season.

“They are not fazed by the Championship but if we make the top four again – and that will be a tough ask – then they know what to expect. If we get there, then those guys will be more than ready for that next stage.”

Former Bulls captain Purtell was a direct replacement for Wes Naiqama, a senior figure in London’s outside backs.

Henderson said: “It was important we signed someone of equal ability and quality and personality-wise too. Purts will bring that experience and level-headedness to make a positive contribution to our youth and support Jamie Langley in the academy. It’s the start of the next chapter of his career but he will still also add a lot of value as a player too.

“In any team, it’s important you get the balance and chemistry right between youth and experience.

“I’m sure Purts will play a lot for us next season and, after five seasons at Bradford, I think he was getting a bit stale and needed a new challenge.

“He had been through a lot of adversity but I think we will get the reward of seeing him back to where we know he can be.”

Pitts effectively replaces Foster and Henderson said: “When we knew Foster was leaving, it was important we found a replacement who was just as good if not better.

“We’ve got a really cracking signing in Pitts because he’s still young and hungry to succeed and get back into Super League.

“He can score and create tries, has a great engine and attitude, and I’m just waiting to see if we can unearth that potential even further.”

Sammut, meanwhile, could also emerge as a key figure for the Ealing-based Broncos in 2017. Henderson also has Api Pewhairangi and William Barthau as half-back options and said: “The great thing about all three of them is their versatility.

“We need this kind of quality to push towards getting back to Super League.

“Jarrod has had a bit of X-factor but I think he’s really matured and is managing games a lot better.

“He’s a much more all-rounded player now.”
