BULLS managing director Steve Ferres has paid tribute to Paul Rowley following his shock resignation at Championship rivals Leigh.

Rowley walked out on the Centurions on Thursday, citing personal reasons for his departure in a development that stunned the world of rugby league.

It is not clear why he has chosen to go with the new season on the horizon and a star-studded squad having been assembled by boss Derek Beaumont.

Bradford and Leigh enjoyed a close rivalry last season, with Rowley's men beating Jimmy Lowes' side in a stormy opening game of the season.

Ferres said: "Paul Rowley has performed an outstanding job at Leigh in recent seasons and I'm very surprised to hear that he has left. I'm sure he won't be out of a job for long."

A report has also emerged claiming that star man Ryan Brierley has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave Leigh in the event of Rowley jumping ship.

That has raised doubts over Brierley's future at the club – but Ferres is happy with how the Bulls are shaping up following the addition of Richie Mathers.

"The squad is always fluid, and we're always looking to strengthen, but we're delighted with the signing of Richie," he said.

"Johnny Campbell is working his way back from a very serious injury and Oscar Thomas is learning his trade. He will get where he needs to be but he needs help in doing so.

"We felt we needed experience in a key position and signing Richie gives us that. He goes about his job in a professional manner and we believe his presence will prove invaluable to the squad."
