JIMMY Lowes had no hesitation choosing Chev Walker as his captain, but picking his best team might prove rather more problematic.

A quick glance at the Bulls’ squad shows 29 players, 23 of whom have played in Super League, and all out to stake a claim to be in Lowes’ top 17.

The head coach will already have a fair idea of how his side will shape up next season as Bradford seek an immediate return to Super League.

It will be a balancing act, though, and Lowes will surely rotate his large squad throughout what promises to be a long and gruelling campaign.

He needs his men to be consistent enough to finish in the top four of the Championship – and ideally in top spot – before the serious business of the Super Eight play-offs get underway.

That is when the top four in the Championship will face the bottom four Super League sides for the right to be in the top flight in 2016.

So, what would your best Bulls team look like when everyone is fighting fit?

Lowes already knows that many of his men can be trusted to do the job asked of them.

Walker, Danny Addy, Tom Olbison, Adam Sidlow, Paul Clough, Matty Blythe, Dale Ferguson, Jean-Philippe Baile, Adrian Purtell, Jay Pitts and Lee Gaskell are proven Super League players.

But there are a number of new signings in the squad who remain unproven, unknown quantities.

The Bulls have taken a punt on certain players and seen how they can develop them.

Karl Davies and Samir Tahraoui are adapting to life as full-time professional rugby league players for the first time.

Assistant Bulls coach Karl Harrison admitted in a recent interview that the pair needed working on during pre-season.

Chris Ulugia and Dave Petersen, who like Davies have joined the Bulls from the Mackay Cutters, are also making the transition from playing their rugby on a part-time basis.

Jake Mullaney seems certain to succeed Brett Kearney at full back and also has the ability to kick goals.

Out wide, you would think that, fitness permitting, Danny Williams and Etu Uaisele will start the season as Lowes’ two first-choice wingers.

Williams has always been solid enough throughout his career and Uaisele, a former NRL player, showed he can score tries at Championship level with Featherstone and Sheffield last season.

Competition for places in the centres looks a lot fiercer.

Purtell and Blythe would be the first-choice for many, but Baile, Ulugia, Ryan Shaw, Adam Henry and possibly Lucas Walshaw will also push for inclusion.

The half-back partnership will see Gaskell paired with Harry Siejka with promising youngster Adam Brook also seeking regular game-time.

Gaskell’s speed of thought, movement and strength can be impossible to diffuse at times and it is hard to see the majority of Championship sides stopping him next season.

Siejka, it has to be remembered, has had plenty of injury problems so far during his career but it is to be hoped he can stay fit and fulfil his potential.

Addy provides further cover at half-back and Lowes is arguably spoilt in the hooking role he graced for so many years.

Adam O’Brien’s game reached new heights when Lowes took over last season and he played 80 minutes in big wins over Wigan, Leeds and Hull FC.

Lowes likes his hookers to play the entire game, so will he even need a back-up dummy half on the bench?

Nathan Conroy and newcomer Vila Halafihi are below O’Brien in the pecking order but will hope to get as many opportunities as possible to prove their ability.

In the front row, Sidlow has impressed Lowes since the Bulls coach arrived at Odsal while Clough, who spent a decade at St Helens, commands respect.

It is hard to look past these two as Lowes’ starting props next term.

Dan Fleming did well in the Championship at Batley on dual-reg from Castleford and, having represented Wales in the recent European Championships, his career looks ready to finally take off.

Sam Bates, who impressed with a couple of feisty appearances under Francis Cummins last season, will compete with Fleming, Tahraoui and Davies for a place in Lowes’ plans.

In the second row, Olbison has been a mainstay for several seasons now while Pitts was one of the Bulls’ most consistent players last term.

Ferguson endured a nightmare debut campaign with injuries in 2014 but he was outstanding for Huddersfield when they finished top the year previously.

Walshaw, a huge, versatile presence, is also a second-rower and logic would dictate that by Walker taking the captain’s armband, the former Leeds man will be playing fairly regularly in 2015.

There is young Alex Mellor too, who caught the eye during the wins over Leeds and Wigan last season.

Addy and Petersen will battle it out for the loose forward spot with Walker, Pitts and Ferguson also able to play there.

As well as a fight for promotion, the Bulls will also be battling with each other for places in Lowes’ team.

It should be some scrap.
