Matty Blythe believes he became an established Super League player last season – now he is aiming to take his game to the next level.

The centre enjoyed a blistering start to his Bulls career after initially joining on a season-long loan from his hometown club Warrington.

He scored four tries in his opening five games but was struck down by a back problem at Widnes in March, which ruled him out for two months.

He then suffered a knee injury during a defeat against Wigan in July which meant he made only one more appearance before the season ended.

But his performances earned him a permanent three-year deal and he is currently in the thick of pre-season training.

“Fitness-wise, I’m feeling really good now,” said 25-year-old Blythe. “I worked hard in the games I played and was unlucky with injuries for a third of the season, which I was disappointed with.

“But I’m hoping to come back stronger next year and work hard for the Bulls because they have put their faith in me.

“It was nice to get the security of a three-year deal because I obviously wanted to be a Super League player last year and I think I achieved that.

“Now it’s time for me to work on and really push on.”

Blythe played in the centres and second row last season and is expected to push for the right-centre berth again.

“I’ve mainly played on the right but I’ve filled in a few times on the left as well,” he said.

“If I’m playing left or right centre or in the back row, it’s obviously up to Franny as to where he thinks I’m best suited.

“I’m looking forward to playing again because watching England in the World Cup just makes you want to play even more.

“We’ve got a good set-up here at Tong and we’re going to work really hard up until Christmas, get that little break then come back again and build towards the new season.”

Blythe also applauded the signing of Dale Ferguson from Huddersfield following his impressive displays for Scotland at the World Cup.

Blythe added: “I’ve played against Dale a few times. He’s strong, he tackles hard and he scores tries. He’s got everything you want for a second-rower.”
