ROUND TWO: WATFORD 1, CITY 2

Garry Thompson chose the perfect moment to net his first City goal – and shock their Championship hosts.

The second-round clash was heading for extra-time thanks to Kyel Reid’s late equaliser. But nobody had told Thompson.

Deep into the fourth minute of added time, Rory McArdle pumped a free-kick into the Watford box. Keeper Jonathan Bond’s punch was a weak one and dropped for Thompson, who instantly lashed it home.

It completed an amazing fightback from Phil Parkinson’s side, who had only drawn level in the 85th minute.

Again the goal came from McArdle’s set-piece, Luke Oliver’s blocked shot being finished off by the alert Reid.

City, who included teenage defender Carl McHugh for the first time, should have been ahead by half-time. But Alan Connell rattled the inside of the post with their best chance and a strong penalty shout for a foul on Zavon Hines was ignored.

Gianfranco Zola’s side improved after the break and their pressure was rewarded after 71 minutes when Ikechi Anya beat Jon McLaughlin from 25 yards.

But City had other ideas and the two late goals clinched a first-ever away win at Vicarage Road in the most dramatic fashion.
