Bradford City: McHugh will come of age at Bantams, says Phil Parkinson

Carl McHugh in pre-season action against Wexford Carl McHugh in pre-season action against Wexford

Carl McHugh has no intention of being a bit-part player for City.

The teenage defender’s one-year deal slipped under the radar last week in the light of Zavon Hines being announced at the same time.

But Phil Parkinson expects the 19-year-old Irishman to make his mark at Valley Parade .

He said: “Carl is champing at the bit to play. He’s a really committed character.

“We’ve got to work with him and improve him in many aspects but he’s got so many good qualities.

“He’s a tough lad with a great left foot and he’s going to be a good defender.”

Parkinson’s strong links with Reading were instrumental in bringing McHugh north and City took him on the Ireland tour last month. The contract was delayed after he suffered a knock in training.

But McHugh’s performance for the reserves in last week’s behind-closed-doors game at Leeds convinced the club he was worth a deal.

Parkinson added: “I’ve always liked the look of him. He played centre back against Wexford but then got a slight injury.

“I just wanted to look at him at left back against Leeds and he did everything in that game that we thought he could do. We needed someone else in the squad who can play that position.”

McHugh’s ability to play left back as well as in the middle will offer valuable cover to James Meredith. After the issues with the position last season, Parkinson is pleased to have two defenders playing there on their natural side.

“It’s getting the balance of the team right which is so important,” said Parkinson.

“We had Marcel (Seip) playing there a lot last year and he did a very good job for us. But at times, especially at home, he killed the fluidity of our play by having to check inside on his right.

“Ideally you want a natural left footer there and we’ve now got two of them in James and Carl.”

Shaun from Richmond--likes to provoke controversy. He deliberately makes his controversial sound bites. To incite those who wish to comment on these boards. I am surprised, that our very sensible commentators, continue to bite on his rhetoric. His use of capital letters should cause a certain person to comment,in his derisive manner. Shaun has never made any sensible, constructiv
e comment for many seasons. It is time to ignore his sarcastic upper case poor statements. Perhaps, he will then refrain from deliberately provoking his controversy on Bradford City etc.

I enjoyed our match against Fleetwood. Another poor League 2 Referee. Plus Lady Luck smiled on the City Team , when Fleetwood hit the Crossbar in the first half at 0-0.Again they struck the post in the second half at 1-0.
*
I will be at our match today v Wimbledon. I,like all City Supporters, will be hoping for another win--plus Lady Lucks continued smile, on the City Team that plays .

Freddy, not sure what any of that has got to do with carl mchugh?

Anyway, McHugh is going to have a real problem getting into the 1st team ahead of Meredith. But sounds like a real prospect. PP really seems to be doing the business.

I have to agree with settler on all his points, meridith has stepped up as have all the new lads. Genuine optimism especially if we gather some momentum. Bring on the wombles

Just leaving the subject on McHugh and Shaun for a mo. I just hope the pitch has been sorted after Tuesdays game. I know we had a very heavy rainfall about 90min before the actual game and the newly layed pitch couldn't take such a battering. What surprised me was that at half time, Nobody was out on that area with forks or scrapers to try and get rid of all that standing water. I think the Club stated that it spent £75 on re-laying the new playing surface and even before the 1st game was played, it was waterlogged. Is there something wrong with the drainage system or what?

Alex hope it was more than £75 you say otherwise why bother lol seriously think it was £50k the spent on drainage and relaying the ground but tuesday weather was a couple of freak downpours before kick off so no chance for it to be drained or forked. I would imagine covers were on over night and this morning so they dont get caught out again. On the subject of McHugh I dont know much about him but getting in front of Meredith is a big ask after his performance on tueeday against the Cods.

It's nothing more than attention seeking. Pathetic really.

Anyway, pleased with the signing of McHugh- sounds like we've got a good one there. Good luck to the lads today, play like you did on Tuesday and the result will take care of itself.

I'm surprised at the comments regarding the left back posiiton last season. As far as i'm concerned it was a self inflicted problem as Parkinson inherited Threlfall and O'Brien, but chose to play Seip.

Still, Meredith looked a very good player on Tuesday and if McHugh is of a similar ability hopefully we won't have too many problems this season!

The reason PP played Seip was because the poor man inherited Threfall and O'Brien!
