James Hanson bags brilliant winner for Bradford City

City match-winner James Hanson in action at Notts County City match-winner James Hanson in action at Notts County

Notts County 0, City 1

James Hanson claimed a spectacular extra-time winner as new-look City kicked off their campaign by claiming the scalp of Notts County in the Capital One Cup.

The big striker hit a delightful curling left-foot shot into the top corner from 20 yards in the 95th minute after good work from Kyel Reid and Nahki Wells.

Reid, who enjoyed a fine game and tormented Carl Regan throughout, could have made the game safe soon after but he blazed over.

Nevertheless, the Bantams held on for victory against their League One hosts to give much cause for optimism heading into next week’s League Two opener at Gillingham.

City boss Phil Parkinson handed debuts to six players in Stephen Darby, James Meredith, Rory McArdle, Gary Jones, Alan Connell and Garry Thompson.

All impressed as Notts County striker Lee Hughes was kept quiet throughout, but his strike partner Yoann Arquin was guilty of a horrendous miss in the closing stages of normal time.

Hughes saw his shot pushed away by Matt Duke and the rebound fell to Arquin, who could only fire the ball against the bar with the goal at his mercy.

That ensured another 30 minutes and, after Hanson’s stunning strike, Wells almost made the game safe in the second period of extra-time when he saw his shot parried by Magpies stopper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Hughes then fired over when well placed in the closing stages as City held on for a famous victory.

Get In there! Not even a full strength team in my eyes either. Think our defence will be the key this season.
Shame it went to extra time but will have given the lads a good run out and the gills have to travel down to Bristol Tuesday night. Let's hope theirs goes to extra time. Have the tickets for Gillingham been put on sale yet?

Very good start to the season! Wasn't expecting a win to be honest. Since Davies was signed at beginning of the summer I have been quietly confident that PP is/has put together a competitive squad that will challenge the top of league 2.

What is more encouraging is that the starting 11 appears to be a little weaker without Davies, Jones and Ravenhill, with Doyle on the bench, alongside Wells. So on todays evidence can we believe not only our 1st 11 will be strong but also the fringe/squad players will be able to make an impact? It is too early to make an accurate assessment but the signs are encouraging. Maybe another right winger and another centre midfielder and I think we would have the necessary cover for further injuries.

Starting to look forward to the Fleetwood game already.

Agree with poster above re city. Still think we need another quality central midfield signing. Other than that this is an excellent squad. Still hoping the Taiwo deal might get sorted. If we could get him i'd be putting my tenner on City going up.

Sounded a good solid performance which should give the team confidence next week. Parky will have a real dilemma over his central defence pairing when Davies is back. It's going to be a shame for whoever gets left out. Interesting to see Connell getting the nod over Nahki. There's going to be real competition when everyone gets fit.

But the flip side is we seam to have matched them on the stats n this should be a great catalyst for what could be a promotion season. 9/2 to get promotion via any route seams like a gime. great signing pp n hats of to the two chairmen too. up the city

Great result, each and every player gave their all which is all we ever ask for in the Claret and Amber shirt. Gary Jones is immense, credit to Will Atkinson he stood out for me today, Reidy also had the defense in turmoil - one word of caution, we did look a touch nervy from corners but I'm sure a bit of confidence will put that right.

Sadly I had to leave at the end of the 90 as I needed to pick my daughter up from a week away, but the guys on BBC Radio Notts where absolutely full of praise for City and their support!

even though we should know by now it was still an unexpected result. The defence sounded strong and i feel thats the key to the season with this squad of players. Yes they should have won the game at the end of normal; time but a clean sheet is a huge confidence booster.

Very very early days and we are too short on numbers. but a nice start. We reasonably well in the cups last year but PP will feel that our squad may not cope with too many.

Radioo said today that this current squad is the highest budget spent on wages since we entered division four. PP has thus been supported by the chairman, lets see if he can deliver......looking forward to finding out......

My only concerns remain about right wing if Thompson is playing there under sufference then we have a problem there and with all due respect Atkinson is not a first choice right winger, also slightly shy on numbers.

Excellent result. I feared a defeat and the negative critics feasting on the opportunity have a go at players. manager and chairmen. Phew!

A win against a higher league team who just missed out on promotion last season and who have added players to that team with the intention of strengthening it and achieving promotion. This was no friendly in aid of giving players a steady work-out, this was about winning, and we won.

Excellent result and performance... Will Atkinson deserves plaudits for a great showing - sure, a couple of misplaced passes, but then so did most of the others - but the collective effort negated any rough edges from individuals. Whilst WA is still to convince as a winger he definately proved today that he is a viable option for a centre-mid position.

Glad the 'luck' went our way. It can make a massive difference to a season's outcome and i'll accept being lucky and winning as opposed to being unlucky and loosing. I'm with Stuart McCall and Neil Warnock when they said 'it's better to be a lucky manager than a good one'. Winning 1st entertaining 2nd in our position and at professional level for me.

And well done the much underrated -by some- Jimmy Hanson for continuing to prove you are a natural goal scorer.

The manager states that he is not bothered about the result ok. i accept that, he even says we have six debutants which is rather a niave comment seeing as Notts also follow that line of thinking. EVERY TEAM wants to start the season up and running and what better way than a cup victory against higher opposition ,(sic) the chairmen will no doubt look forward to a possible plum home tie whilst some posters on this site will still maintain that we do not change a winning team. Bye the way i am thrilled to bits to have been amongst the 850 city fans but didn't have time to visit "ye olde trip to jerusalam" but hop picking next week

First game of the season against a higher division club, what do you expect? None of our players to give any balls away? Why not criticise for Hanson not scoring in normal time or criticise Connel, well he must be poor and needs to work on scoring too because he didn't yesterday. Does it matter if someone gives a couple of balls away, believe it or not, every single player will and does. I watched Brazil in the pub yesterday and saw world class players doing the same. I saw them in the flesh against Belarus and believe it or not, some of the players lost the ball.

This is not a direct go at you, but fans in the country, the mentality is amazing really. We win a game and you single out ONE player that he did not give a robotic text book perfect performance. We expect strikers to score every match, we expect the play to be attacking all the time. When I saw Brazil go down a goal to Belarus, they had their game plan and it wasn't always going forward. They passed back constantly, passed the ball to and fro, and then struck when they had half a chance. If that was England, we would have panicked and thrown everything forward opening up the back.

He is a young lad thrown into the deep end yesterday against higher league opposition and he walked away with 3 points, and played out of position in doing so. You could have just said "Well done Will" and leave it at that instead of coming up with "...BUT....." This isn't a go at you specifically, it is just the general mentality some fans have in this country.

Well done Will, well done to all the lads.

I said as long as we get through I it doesn't matter who we get. We could get a team like Burton Albion at home and lose or a relatively small Premiership club like Wigan away and win. I just long for a big money making draw like Chelsea or Man U, a game that will see a huge attendance and add to City's coffers. That could be more beneficial than getting a smaller club at that stage, progessing and then getting another smaller club the following round and losing.

I just want us to progess, I am not bothered who against, home or away, a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th division club, but just as long as we sneak through and finally get that big draw we have not had for well over a decade. So my point of view, I don't think it matters who we get, we normally up our game against much better opposition and always have a club lower than us in the football league ladder knocking us out.

That big draw could get us another quality player or 2 in itself come January or for the following season.

Don't often disagree with you Dave but afraid I have to on this one. Overall a great team performance and Will did have a better than usual input this week. His second half performance eclipsed his first half but I think you will find that the reason for this was more in the other CMs performance and drive. Gary Jones played like two men for the whole match. WA has now had two half decent performances in ye many games, certainly not enough to convince me he is the answer to any of our problems and certainly not good enough to keep any of the regular CMs out of the starting 11.

I thought we just edged it overall but Notts had a couple of better chances than us. Duke making a couple of good saves and the glaring miss in the 89th minute. My MoM if you couldn't have guessed would go to GJ, maybe I am wrong and it was Will's influence on him that brought about this sterling performance.

Bright points, we looked like a solid unit from front to back, the debutants all had good to very good games, the stalwarts matched this(Hanson, Reid and Oliver) The full backs look like they want to or have been told to push on more than last season.

Low points, Wells looks like he needs a couple more games to find his shooting boots/form from last season, we still do not get round our man enough on either flank and deliver balls for the forwards to come onto, if this continues we will get found out and our one style system will be negated by other teams closing down our outlets.

Might as well shut the comments board then eh?

We are sharing opinions, mine is that although Will had a better game we had and have more capable players than he in any of the positions he can play. Others may have a different view and are welcome to it. 45 minutes of average game time don't justify a starting place if we have a choice. We did in Scott Brown. He may have had no better a game but he'd have gained invaluable 1st team competitive gametime.

PP made the call and we won, so in the end his opinion is the vital one, his differs from mine. So even talking in hindsight I'm sort of proving myself wrong but hold that belief.

Listen mate, I was there as well and the boy Atkinson DID NOT have a 'great game'. Nobody that I've spoken to thought he had a 'great game'. You're comparing Saturdays performance with what he gave us last season and to be honest a blind penguin with a club foot could have done a better job.

It's stupid, ott comments like yours that causes confrontation and gets honest, fair minded supporters like PCBA, ormanroyd and myself into trouble because it looks like we're having a pop at individual players and in my case emphasising any shortcomings with a sarky comment, when in fact all we are trying to do is inject a little realism into proceedings.

It was a good win and it looks like there's something to build on. But let's keep it real shall we? Atkinson and a couple of others were just about OK, nothing more, nothing less.
