Connell joins Bradford City

City have snapped up Swindon striker Alan Connell on a two-year deal.

The 29-year-old becomes Phil Parkinson’s eighth summer signing and links up with his new team-mates in time for their week-long trip to Ireland.

Parkinson said: "I'm obviously delighted to get Alan on board. He's an intelligent striker with a good goalscoring record in recent years and will add something different to our attack."

Connell finished top scorer with 13 goals in Paulo Di Canio’s title-winning side but was deemed surplus to requirements by the Italian for League One.

The former Bournemouth, Brentford and Hereford hitman joined Swindon a year ago from Grimsby for a fee believed to be over £100,000.

City swooped after Swindon came to an agreement with London-born Connell, who had another 12 months on his County Ground contract to run. He passed a medical before putting pen to paper.

Scunthorpe and Stevenage were among several clubs who had also been linked with him.

Anybody else getting more and more excited for the season now?

As stated, that is the one more in before Ireland. Possibly another to come shortly but I really do expect any shortfall in the squad to be covered by long term loans now.

Matt Hamshaw must be under consideration if he is on trial? I suspect City need at least three more players for the squad. Further cover at the back and someone creative in the middle. Striker Options must be full now.

Have I read somewhere that Hamshaw can play either on the right-wing or as an attacking midfielder? As we have Thompson and Atkinson vying for the right-wing berth, is Hamshaw being considered as competition for GJones?
.
I still think we need full-back cover/competition, as well as someone to challenge Reid on the left. Also we only have 3 centre-backs (plus 1 out long-term, who PP wants to release anyway), so, do we need to look at cover there?

first i would like to say thanks for a great day on the last day of last season, first time i have been to your ground,it was great to raise our red/white scarfs for the fire disaster and the applause also from you for our players at the end.
second i would like to say what a great player you have in allan connell, any other manager would have kept him, he will be a great goal scorer for you this season, he gave us 100% everygame scored vital goals.many town fans classed him as an impact player coming on from the bench but i would have started him every game.
But paolo is on another planet to us, no one knows who he will pick, fall out with, praise,
paolo said he will not cut it this season with us. so he must move on, we have signed collins, and williams who will take us to the next step.
many town fans have had big bets on us @ 11/1 which i have had £150.
and many including myself had £80 @ 22/1 after we lost 5 on the bounce at the start of the season.
third.. i fancy rotherham for div 2, but now hope you are in the mix.
fourth... have a great season and will look out for connell and hope he bangs many in..

a quality forward who will score loads if given the chance, just think he finished with 13 for us (top scorer) and we piissed the league.
But he will miss sitters, so give him a chance and stick with him.i think we paid £175k for him gave him a 2 year contract and then gave him to you for free.

Never heard of him,Top scorer with13 goals,I cant remember ever seeing him down on score sheet!if you was a top scorer for for the title winners i would imagine you would score more than 13 as well lol!!!!

Decent signing again. Certainly a step up from Niall Rodney! Still need a couple more players but we have on paper a very good starting eleven for this league.

Good signing i reckon, saw him score a couple in Sky games last year and his movement looks very sharp, could see him interchanging with Wells and taking a bit of the slack from Hanson.

Noticed York were linked with him when we signed Meredith and thought then he'd end up at a better level than that - glad it's with us!!

Forget Andy Gray now. he is history and like we all said, If he really wanted to come back to play for City, he would have signed straightaway and not keep us waiting.

i suppose you wouldnt have heard about him, like i couldnt name one of your players on the last game.
as for top scorer with only 13,perhaps thats why you was not challenging at all last year. paolo chucked out a player who scored 6 goals in the first 8 games due to his attitude,
we had every player in our team who scored 6 plus goal, which included a rotation of a huge pool of players.
as for connells goals it was in the LIVE game on sky when we were losing 2-1 at home to rotherham when he came off the bench to score two goals to win the game 3-2, it ws then our season changed,
also if he scored the winning goal to get you to wembley im sure you would remember him.
still if you want a player who will score you 20+ this season sign mendi kerrouche who has got a poor attitude but will score,
a player who scores 20+ wont win you the league if others dont chip in
as for your last quote
we piissed the the league with a 13 goal striker.
how did you finish in the table LOL.

Waynus, twas I posted a small bio on the otrher thread re Hamshaw. 'worth the entrance fee alone on his day' 'learned his trade under waddle'

To the stfc fan, thanks for the extra info re Connel, many city fans hadn't heard of Lee Mills or Robbie Blake when we signed them. I'll leave it at that.

good signing:scores goals for fun:13 this year and a hatful the previous season for Grimsby. A class act

A REAL CHALLENGE NOW FOR HANSON: but we need players capable of putting a whole series of good, quality crosses in form both sides of the pitch

So someone who scored less than Hanson last season but in a team that won the league as opposed to a struggling team who rarely crossed a ball is going to be challenging him for the target man role? Think again.

When fit and used correctly JH is one of the most dangerous front men in the lower two divisions, I'm hoping this season he gets better service cos his scoring record is very good considering the struggle the team has had over that period, with him being one of the few positives. Cost hardly owt and scores goals, Nahki can also be accredited with the same.
