STUART McCall admits some of his players need more game time before he knows what his best starting line-up could be.

Injuries among his front line have denied him the chance to try out certain combinations in pre-season ahead of Saturday's League One opener at home to Blackpool.

The chief blow has been to spearhead Charlie Wyke, who only played in the first warm-up fixture at Park Avenue before suffering a small hamstring tear.

That has made the striker, who scored 25 goals last season, a big doubt for the start of the campaign, while other front men have had to be held back due to niggling injuries, with Alex Jones, Dominic Poleon and Paul Taylor missing games.

When asked how close he was to knowing his best line-up, McCall said: "It's difficult because we haven’t been able to match people up together, certainly in the forward areas.

"I wouldn’t be able to say ‘yeah, I definitely know my starting 11 or my best 11' to be honest until we get everyone back fit and ready.

"But last season, we went into the first opening game and had a couple of injuries in the week leading up to it.

"Nathan Clarke and Tim Dieng both pulled out last minute and we had to play Romain (Vincelot) at the back for the first time and he went on to play half a season there.

"Injuries are part and parcel of football. We haven’t got anything major, they are little niggly ones, especially in the forward area which has curtailed looking at certain things.

"We just need to get a lot more game time into some of the lads who have missed out recently.

"Whatever side we put out on Saturday we’ll be ready and we’ll be very competitive."

Though the season starts this weekend, there is still the best part of a month to go for City to finalise their recruitment for the first half of the campaign.

But McCall, who is chasing a centre half and possibly another defender, hopes any signings can be made soon to bed them in now the serious business is about to get underway.

He said: "We got a lot of deals done early to get the lads in for pre-season.

"I think all managers are alike in that you don’t want to dive into things but you want people integrated into your squad as soon as you can. So it's the sooner the better for me, but you’d much rather get the right one than just a quick one."

Meanwhile, former City trialist Gordon Greer has agreed a deal to rejoin Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock.

The 36-year-old centre half went on the Bantams' pre-season tour to Austria and Germany but the club opted not to sign him.
