MARK Marshall is dialled in on sealing the best season of his career with a Wembley winner's medal.

City's newly-crowned player of the year has revealed the secret behind his success – a list of inspirational notes on his mobile phone.

Marshall set out his personal targets before the start of the campaign and has kept a copy of them as his screensaver.

He said: "People might laugh at it but it's always good to have an idea of what you want in life. It's true that what you think about the most, you try the hardest to bring about.

"I had my notes down at the start of the season about what I wanted to achieve. It's always good to reassure yourself of what you want and that's been something I've tried to do all my life."

Marshall's targets included ten assists, ten goals – he has six so far – and being named player of the year. That honour at Monday night's awards evening at Valley Parade left the usually talkative winger for once lost for words.

The plaudits from the fans highlighted the transformation for a player who was looking for a way out last summer after a tough first year at the club.

Marshall said: "Coming back at the start of the season, the first steps were getting in the team and playing week in week out. I knew that I wasn't guaranteed a place and that made me work harder every game I played.

"There was no safe place in the team, I had to play to the best of my ability and that helped me fight to find some consistency.

"The notes have helped by reminding me what I wanted to achieve. The confidence grew from the small goals, getting in the team first, then playing one game, two, three, four in a row.

"Even now, if selected on Sunday, I'll go out and do my best because I'm not guaranteed to be in the play-off team."

Marshall has one more goal written on his mobile – going up. The 29-year-old winger has not got a promotion on his CV so far. The closest he came was being part of the Swindon squad beaten by Millwall at Wembley in the 2010 play-offs.

He said: "It would be a great experience to go back there and hopefully get a victory. We've definitely shown our consistency because there haven't been many other teams who have been in a play-off place all season like us.

"The play-offs are a lottery and it's about who turns up on the day. We've obviously got the quality but it's who can settle their nerves and take control. We hope to have calmer players on the day so we can turn over whoever we get.

"I'm over the moon to win player of the year. I've been through a lot over my football years and to come back and get this accolade is massive for me.

"I wrote down what I wanted to achieve and I've done some of those things now. Hopefully we can add promotion to that list and make it a very successful season."
