JOSH Cullen will not let his lack of City goals put him off from pulling the trigger.

The on-loan midfielder remains one of the leading lights in a season that has seen the Bantams occupy a play-off spot for seven months.

Cullen makes the team tick with performances that continue to win plaudits right across League One. But there is one area of his game that is still surprisingly light – he has scored just once at MK Dons in August.

The 20-year-old said: "It's something I'm working on every day in training. I feel like I've had the licence to go forward more under the gaffer.

"I've probably been a bit unlucky with a few shots, although I should have done better in a few situations.

"The key for me is to keep getting in those areas and it will come. I'm certainly working hard on the training pitch. I can't do any more than getting myself in those positions."

Cullen fired a couple of efforts wide in City's win over Peterborough last week but was not alone in lacking composure in front of goal.

Assistant boss Kenny Black said: "I think Josh is a little bit frustrated that he hasn't got more, certainly with the ability he's got.

"Last Saturday was a prime example of players getting into decent positions and not making the most of it. Tony McMahon blasted one over the bar, Josh had a couple of efforts over and Tim Dieng near the end.

"We drum it into them on a daily basis that when you're through on goal, you've got to try to work the goalkeeper because the second phase could be a rebound or a deflection."

Yet Cullen is determined not to let any personal frustration give him second thoughts about getting into scoring positions.

He said: "If I stop doing that, then I'm definitely not going to score. I'll keep taking the responsibility to shoot.

"I'm not going to start thinking 'I've only scored one this season' and let my confidence go a bit. I know I've got the ability to do that. It's just a case of keeping getting in there and hopefully a few will fall to me.

"I'd rather have only scored once and be doing my job with the team in a good position, rather than having six or seven and we're struggling a bit. But I'll keep at it and hopefully that next goal will come before too long."

Cullen will also not allow his focus to wander on to how City's promotion rivals might be getting on. With Fleetwood and Bolton facing each other, the Bantams can make further inroads on the teams above them if they beat Coventry today.

But Cullen insists their own situation is all that matters and said: "It's important not to look too much at the league table and the teams around you.

"All we can do is our own job and try to get three points every time we step on the pitch. You can't predict what is going to happen elsewhere. No team deserves to go out and walk over anyone.

"We'll just try our best to put everything we've been working on together and put in another good team performance."

Meanwhile City have signed former Sunderland teenager Dan Pybus on a short-term contract. The central midfielder has been on trial for the reserves.
