NEW City recruit Jordy Hiwula is convinced he can strike up a dynamic double act with James Hanson.

The on-loan Huddersfield hitman could get his first opportunity to partner Hanson in tonight's friendly at St Johnstone.

The 21-year-old played the last half hour against Gateshead but that was alongside youngster Reece Webb-Foster after Hanson had gone off.

Now he is looking forward to building up an understanding with the Bantams targetman – and believes they can work well as a team up front.

Hiwula saw how effective Hanson can be at close quarters last season when he was in the Walsall side on the wrong end of the striker's first career hat-trick. He is much happier to be on the same side.

Speaking at City's training base in Scotland, Hiwula said: "I've played against him a few times over the last two years and he's a handful.

"He caused a lot of problems last season (against Walsall) and that's how he managed to get the goals.

"Obviously he's got attributes that I don't have and I have some that he doesn't, so hopefully we can work well together and build up a good partnership.

"I think we can. It's going to take a bit of time but once we get playing together, we'll soon learn what each other is good at and play to our strengths.

"I've played in a two before, so I don't see any problem with that. I think it will help me as well to have someone else up there.

"You'll always have two strikers in the box when the ball goes wide, so it's a win-win in a way."

Walsall boss John Whitney was desperate to take Hiwula back to the Saddlers for a third spell when Huddersfield indicated he was available for further loan duty.

But Hiwula feels City and Stuart McCall will prove to be the best fit for his own progress and said: "When I knew Bradford had come in for me, I just wanted to get here as soon as possible.

"It's important to get in early, play a few games and get to know the rest of the squad.

"It's good in the respect that the manager has been here before, so he really knows the club and how it works. I'm glad he brought me in.

"For me, when I got the nod I could go out on loan, I just knew Bradford was the best place for me. Obviously it's not far from Huddersfield as well, so they can keep a good eye on me.

"Hopefully I can play a regular amount of games. I didn't feel I got as many as I should have last season – but this is part of my progress and development.

"I've played in this division for the last two years now and it's very competitive. There are loads of good players in there and I want to show what I can do."

City's squad may be a work in progress still but Hiwula has been happy with what he has seen so far. The likes of Webb-Foster, Danny Devine and Kwame Boateng have also caught the eye.

Hiwula said: "There are some good players here as well as some good young boys who have come to training with us. They've shown that they can get into the team because there are a few injuries as well.

"It gives them a good opportunity to come away with the first team, train with them and play in these friendly games. It's all good."

McCall believes Hiwula's arrival can rectify a goal-shy record that was the sixth-lowest in League One last season despite their fifth-place finish.

Hiwula said: "I know they didn't score enough last year but they got four against Walsall, which is the weird thing.

"But we're looking to improve on that now, get more shots off and create more chances. Hopefully that will lead to more goals."
