City can use memories of the historic charge to Wembley to fuel their bid for West Yorkshire bragging rights in tonight’s Capital One Cup derby at Huddersfield.

The Bantams make the short hop across the M62 for the first-round clash, 163 days on from lining up against Swansea in the final.

Phil Parkinson will ring the changes but insists his team, who will be backed by 4,000 away fans, will be strong enough for the challenge – and inspired by what they achieved last season.

He said: “Of course we go there as underdogs but with an element of confidence as well. We’ll be ready for it.

“The lads have got great memories from last season and a cup run, as we showed, can have huge benefits from the feel-good factor.

“Huddersfield are a team who have invested a lot again this summer but equally it’s another game where we’ve got nothing to lose.”

Matt Taylor makes his City debut at centre half with Rory McArdle (twisted ankle) out and Andrew Davies rested. Luke Oliver is back on the bench and could get a late run-out. The fit-again defender is the only survivor from the JPT win at Huddersfield in 2011 still with the club.

Parkinson is also pondering his choice of keeper. On-loan Connor Ripley is eligible to play and the City boss may feel this is the best opportunity to see the England under-20 international in action during his 28-day stay.

There could be as many as eight changes in personnel but Parkinson added: “Cast your mind back to when we went to Wigan. We’d just lost Davies and Oliver and we had eight senior players out that day.

“There will be players out for one reason or another but we’ve also got others coming in who were unfortunate not to start on Saturday. They are strong enough to cope.

“We need to get people minutes under their belt which will benefit the whole squad moving forward.”
