Bradford City defender Rory McArdle's own reason to remember the 56

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Rory McArdle: Policeman tribute Rory McArdle: Policeman tribute

Rory McArdle has a personal reason for making sure the Valley Parade fire victims are remembered at Wembley.

City’s tracksuit tops will bear the logo ‘56 – always with us’ in respect for those who died in May 1985.

Defender McArdle, still hoping to prove his fitness in time for Sunday, knows from first hand the pain involved from that fateful day.

He said: “My girlfriend’s dad has a friend who was a policeman in Bradford.

“He was working that day when it happened and was pulling people out of the fire. If it wasn’t for people like him, there might have been more than 56 who lost their lives.

“I hope he is watching the game as people like that deserve this day.

“Getting to Wembley is not just about the players who are at the club now. What happened here with the fire is well documented and we are all aware of that.

“It is great that we will be wearing jackets as we go out with ‘56’ written on them. That, to me, is a great touch.”

McArdle admits he has been staggered by the level of build-up to City’s stunning appearance in the final – but is heading for London with genuine belief.

“This is beyond football. It has put Bradford on the map.

“Everywhere I go, the first thing people say to me is ‘I can’t believe you’re in the Capital One Cup final’. It’s usually with a swearword or two thrown in!

“All the pressure is on Swansea. We saw that last weekend with the team they put out at Liverpool.

“They rested more or less the full-strength team so that shows what is at stake for them. Let’s hope we can cause another upset.”

Yes I would have been sat in the Middle of the Wooden Stand that fateful day. I had travelled up to VP to see the match
But illness overtook me, and I could not go.Listening to 'Tony Delahunty ' (Pennine Radio) whilst laid up in bed. I thought-- I was having a Nightmare.

Looking down into the Valley from my bedroom window--witnessing a great Pall of smoke, spewing up into the sky. Verified --it was not a terrible dream.
*
I would like to purchase one of those Track-Suit Tops --with 56 " Always With Us "..
Or perhaps they could be Auctioned and signed by the Players--for The Burns Unit ?.
Also could more of these Special Tops be acquired for sale in The City Shop?.
*
I still like the idea of every City supporter CLAPPING at the 56 Minute Mark during the Second Half.FOR ONE WHOLE MINUTE. As a mark of remembrance/respect for- those 56 Supporters --Who will be watching from above.

I think we should do it. "always remember the 56" should be chanted when the clock strikes 56 until it strikes 57.

don't forget plastics outnumber STH by 3 to 1. They best keep quiet on Sunday eh :). I too am a 'plastic' as I only take my 5 yo to occasional games (4 losses he has seen this year !) but I have supported the club for ever and have been to many more games than those that swelled the ranks when offered cheap tickets and are now seemingly more valued by the club.
Cannot wait for Sunday - a true once in a lifetime trip to a major final. Come on CIty one last effort for all those supporters plus the 56. I was at school with Paul Hudson - great guy by the way ! CTID
