Leeds Grammar School will meet holders RGS High Wycombe in the final of the Daily Mail RBS Under-15 Cup at Twickenham on April 4 after the pair came through their semi-finals at Broadstreet RFC in Coventry.

Leeds progressed to their first-ever national under-15 final with an 18-7 victory over Trinity School, Croydon, while RGS were taken to the wire by Stowe School before getting home 17-12.

Trinity and Leeds cancelled each other out in a scoreless first half, the opening points coming after two minutes of the second period as Leeds centre Will Newett won a foot race to the ball from Jonny Haslem’s long kick before hacking on and touching down underneath the posts for a try converted by hooker Sam Ward.

The physically imposing Londoners applied pressure and replacement Ben White was held up over the line, but handling errors at crucial moments and some steely Leeds defence denied them any reward.

Ward slotted two excellent penalties from tricky angles as Leeds pulled further ahead before Tom Gorman all but sealed victory for the Yorkshiremen when he latched on to another deep kick to race home from 30 metres.

Gorman was the centre of attention again six minutes from time but for the wrong reasons as referee Jonathan Healey deemed the full back’s deliberate slap of the ball into touch under pressure merited a penalty try, which was easily converted by Thomson.

The seven points provided the previously unbeaten Trinity with a glimmer of hope but it proved too little, too late as a clinical Leeds side claimed their Twickenham prize.
