A tag rugby festival has been hailed a success after over 100 schoolchildren had a ball at the event last week.

Bronte House School hosted the day, which was run by the Rugby Football Union’s regional coaching team, led by community rugby coach Dave Duxbury, and included introductory sessions in the morning before a round-robin tournament was held in the afternoon, which was won by Belmont Grosvenor School.

Mike Barnett, director of sport at Bronte House, wants to bring the event back next year and hopes to increase the levels of participation among local youngsters.

He said: “This was a great way to use a partnership between the school and the RFU for the benefit of over 100 boys and girls.

"We hope this will be an annual event and more and more players can get involved and benefit.

“We would like to say a huge thanks to Dave and his team of coaches for helping make the day such a success.”

Young sports leaders from the Woodhouse Grove sixth form assisted the RFU team of coaches, with Woodhouse Grove providing a perfect venue for the activities.

Duxbury praised the facilities on offer at the school and said he hopes the event will encourage more kids to take up the sport.

He added: “This was a great day’s rugby at a wonderful venue which we hope will have enthused a lot of youngsters to continue to participate in rugby union around Yorkshire.”
