Girls from West Yorkshire enjoyed four days full of netball last week as players from the Leeds Carnegie Superleague team put them through their paces at The Girls’ Grammar School, Bradford.

From skills and drills, agility, attack and defence to fast net, over 120 young netballers from the region gave it their all.

Mornings were spent using themed training sessions with the Superleague team and afternoons were used to put the new training methods into practice with friendly matches.

“It was a really good week for the Leeds Carnegie team and the young enthusiastic netballers from across the region,” said Leeds Carnegie’s head coach Anna Newell.

“It was clear to see everyone enjoyed the training and it was encouraging that the young participants took it so seriously and gave it everything they had.”

One aspect the participants enjoyed most was trying out the new fast-net rules, trialled at The Co-operative World Netball Series in Manchester last month.

“It was just so quick and exciting to play,” said Tori, aged 13.

Newell added: “The girls seemed to love the power plays and the glory they received from shooting outside the circle. Playing a shorter format of the game kept the girls interested, so those with a shorter attention span were entertained and enthralled with the intensity of the match.”

The four-day training session was used to launch the start of The Co-operative Netball Superleague season in December.

Leeds Carnegie will play the first home game of the season against Loughborough Lightning at Leeds Metropolitan University on Saturday, December 12 (2pm).

Leeds Carnegie hope to hold a second training camp at The Girls’ Grammar School, Bradford from February 16-19 next year, and possibly a third one at Easter.
