Campion have proved themselves in more than one age group as the junior summer tournament season reaches its height.

The Manningham-based club took the under-nine title at a rain-hit Bradford & District FA five-a-side event at Rawdon Meadows, while their under-11s were winners on their debut at Silsden’s six-a-side tournament.

The latter event was hailed as a “massive success” by Silsden vice-chairman John Lohan.

More than 80 teams from under-seven to under-11s entered the competition, which attracted a crowd of around 2,000 over the two days.

Local sides locked horns with clubs from further afield, and Lohan said: “It was a fantastic weekend and a massive success.

"It has become one of the most prestigious events of its kind in Yorkshire, with teams already putting in their entries for next year.

“We had scouts from professional clubs, including Man Utd, Man City, Blackburn, Leeds and Bradford City. The weather was excellent on Saturday and we managed to get everything completed on Sunday just before the rain came.”

East Lancashire club Fulledge Colts won the under-sevens and under-nines but lost to Bingley A 3-1 in the under-eights final.

Warley Blues, last year’s under-nine champions, triumphed again as they clinched the under-tens crown, beating Barnoldswick Town 1-0.

Campion under-11s, entering the tournament for the first time, won their event.

A fun competition was also held for under-sixes, in which Barnoldswick Town beat Queensbury Celtic 5-0.

Lohan had special praise for Hilary and Wes Lowry, who were overseeing their first tournament.

He said: “We were inundated with compliments.”

With thousands of pounds being raised, the tournament is set to boost the coffers of Silsden’s ground development fund, which should see the Cobbydalers’ first team return to their Keighley Road home.

Albion Sports and BD3 United were both double winners at the Bradford and District FA tournament.

BD3 United won the under-11s and under-14s, while Albion Sports triumphed at under-ten, where their A team beat their B team, and under-12s.
