TEENAGER Jordan Clements admits that his shock Bradford Open triumph at home club Northcliffe has yet to sink in.

The 19-year-old, currently in his first season of playing regular scratch-team golf, pipped the more experienced Jamie Mountain after a birdie at the first extra play-off hole.

The pair had finished level on two over par before the youngster held his nerve at the 19th to make it back-to-back triumphs for Northcliffe following Mark Cook's triumph at Keighley last year.

He said: "Never in a million years did I think I would win this when you look at the calibre of players who were in the competition and you look at the names who have won the event such as (England A player) Will Whiteoak and Yorkshire captain Darryl Berry.

"It's a massive shock. Just to get the play-off was amazing but then to go and win it – it's not quite sunk in yet.

"I was very nervous in the play-off but I had nothing to lose and tried to just keep calm.

"There were lots of spectators but I had friends and my mum and dad watching which helped. I managed to hit two good shots to leave me about eight feet away. I didn't want to leave my putt short and thankfully it went straight in the middle. I didn't know what to when it went in!"

The day had started well for the former Titus Salt School pupil, who cited his short game as being key to his victory.

He scored an eagle at the par-five second and, though dropped shots followed, birdies at the 14th and 15th saw him card a two-over-par 73.

With only Paul Hillas shooting a sub-70 morning round - his 69 made him the halfway leader but he fell away in the afternoon - that left Clements still in the mix.

And he was boosted by two birdies at the first two holes of his second 18, though a double bogey at the sixth set him back. Further birdies at 15 and 17 saw him card an even-par 71, which saw him set up a shoot-out with former Northcliffe stalwart Mountain, who now plays out of Shipley.

Clements, who is studying for a golf performance degree at Central Lancashire University, was also delighted to keep his club - synonymous with success in the 1990s and early 2000s - on the map.

"It's great for the club after Mark won the title last year," said the two-handicapper. "Everyone has been really thrilled and I've had lots of phone-calls, e-mails and texts congratulating me.

"We're definitely a club on the up and we have some really good young players."

The Wrose-based player's reward for his title was a call-up to the Bradford Union inter-district team for their match against Leeds at Headingley on Sunday.

Bingley St Ives’ Terry Brushwood, who came sixth, won the Jim Wade Trophy for the best combined score in the Bradford Open and Bradford Amateur events.
