LAST weekend’s match winner James Knowles says he may have to revise his goal celebrations after almost injuring himself in front of the travelling fans at Stockport.

Knowles ended a marauding run with a 25 yard shot that sealed Avenue's 3-2 win with almost the last kick of the game.

The centre back doesn’t get too many goals and winning a game for Park Avenue just weeks after returning to the club got the better of him.

He said: “It was a great felling – probably the best feeling since I’ve been back from my injury.”

Knowles suffered a double leg break while playing for FC United of Manchester and was out of the game for over 18 months. He battled back to fitness and signed for former club Farsley Celtic before Mark Bower offered him the chance to play in the National North again.

The player relived last weekend’s match winner, he said: “We’d got a corner in stoppage time and I said to the Killer (central defensive partner Shane Killock) come on let's get on the end of this.

“They had cleared it but we were still pushing forward and I was still in their half, I got the ball back and ran with it and it just opened up so I had a crack. It definitely took a deflection, I don’t know if it would have beaten the keeper anyway but it nestled in the corner.

“I just ran to the Bradford fans and did the old knee slide towards them, but I started to cramp up in one of my hamstrings so I soon got up. I think my days of doing that are finished.”

The victory was Avenue’s fourth in five league games and it lifted them to within touching distance of safety.

Knowles said, “The wins have been great and confidence is high at the moment. The timing is important because going into Christmas there are a lot of points to play for and you can make a big move in the table if things go your way.

“We’re playing one game a week up to Christmas and that’s giving the boss enough time to manage the right amounts of rest and training for each game.”
