NEW Bradford Park Avenue boss Martin Drury won his first game in charge and he will be looking to build on that when he takes his side to Yorkshire Amateur for their second pre-season friendly.

Results in warm-up games count for nothing and no one knows that better than Drury, but he was pleased with the performance and fitness levels of his players in Tuesday night’s 3-0 victory at Selby Town.

New recruit James Walshaw was lively and only denied by some top class saves from the home keeper and the crossbar. The woodwork also foiled Seb Carole, the well-travelled former Leeds United man, who saw a 25-yard drive cannon back off the inside of the post.

The Frenchman was one of five trialists in midweek, including one-time City winger Leon Osborne.

Richard Marshall, with a penalty, Chris Haworth and Adam Clayton were the players on target.

Clayton and Nathan Turner have not yet signed on for the coming season but after injury problems last term they have been asked back by Drury and his assistant Jamie Price in the hope that they can prove their fitness and earn new deals.

Drury gave most of the players some game time at Selby as he elected to play a different outfield ten in each half with new keeper Jon Stewart playing the whole game. The three that have not yet featured are close-season signing Massiah McDonald, club captain Simon Ainge and last season’s top scorer Chib Chilaka.

Striker McDonald is carrying a slight injury but defensive cornerstone Ainge and his fellow former Bantam Chilaka both took part in the pre-match warm-up. They are likely to feature in tomorrow’s game at Yorkshire Amateur.

Unlike their neighbours Farsley Celtic and Guiseley, who both face Football League opponents tomorrow, Avenue’s pre-season is starting low key with two games against Northern Counties East League opposition.

Avenue will face both Farsley and the Lions in later friendly fixtures. They will also play FC Halifax Town and Derby County’s under-21 side during the pre-season.

While Farsley host City and Guiseley are at home to Huddersfield, Liversedge welcome Silsden’s North West Counties top tier rivals Maine Road for what will be their second friendly.

Tonight sees another two local clubs in action for the first time since last season as Brighouse Town host Eccleshill United.
