Former Bradford Salem front-rower Bruce Strachan stepped in to referee tonight’s Spray Plant (UK) Ltd Aire-Wharfe Cup tie at Aire View when the official failed to turn up.
BRADFORD & BINGLEY, who had a clear edge in the backs, beat BRADFORD SALEM 47-15 with tries from Rob Balmforth, Dan Jeffery, Dan Cookson, Tom Gough, Tom Kanauros, Matt Robinson and a spectacular finish by James Morton, Robinson adding five conversions and Adam Wellington one.
Salem, who trailed 33-3 at the interval, showed plenty of spirit in the second half, spurred on by Simon Markey, Paul Dobson, Dean McNicholl and John Morrell, and added tries by McNicholl and Dobson, Sam Riley converting one to add to his first-half penalty.
OTLEY included eight of last season’s under-17 team in defeating OLD OTLIENSIANS 41-10 at Cross Green, scorers including Jameel Karim (2), George Studd, Ollie Brown and man of the match Dave Graham.
ILKLEY won 39-19 at YARNBURY and the first round will be completed tomorrow night when HALIFAX visit WHARFEDALE (7.30).
