Versatile veteran Phil Wilson is hanging his boots up at the end of the season.

But Baildon’s RFU Junior Vase final against Harrow at Twickenham tomorrow won’t be the 38-year-old’s last hurrah.

“I’ve still got the Yorkshire Silver Trophy semi-final, and hopefully the final,” said Wilson, who has clocked up 20 years in the first team.

“But I’ve decided to retire from playing in order to concentrate on my family, and because my body won’t stand playing on a Saturday and training on Tuesdays and Thursdays any more.

“My son Matthew, who is 12, plays for Bradford Hockey Club and Yorkshire, and my other son Daniel, ten, plays rugby for Baildon under-tens.

“I will be coaching Baildon under-12s next season and I will hopefully have a development role within the club.”

Wilson, who has played every pack position for the club apart from hooker and every backs berth apart from full back, has been at Jenny Lane since he was eight, apart from a six-year gap until he was 15 and later a season at Bradford & Bingley.

He said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to represent Baildon for 20 years and to have all the lads as team-mates, just as it is an honour and a privilege to play for Bail-don at Twickenham. We will enjoy the whole experience on Saturday but we are going there to win.

“It will also be for all the lads who lost in the semi-finals at Billericay in 2007, and who haven’t had the chance to go back as players, such as player-coach Hugh Gumbs.”

Dave Duxbury arrived at Baildon as head coach two years ago, and Wilson said: “He has developed everybody as players, and chairman of rugby Andy Whitley has brought even more organisation.”

Baildon will be without hooker Tom Craven (hand) and flanker Matt Williams (knee), and Whitley said: “I’m simply thrilled for all the people who have supported the club and now have a chance to share in this.

“It’s all about the club and the people who have supported the club – some older members and pensioners who have been with us for years.

“It’s all about the community atmosphere. I’m so pleased for everyone that is going down.

“We have one member coming from Australia and a couple coming from the very north of Scotland and Ireland. It’s that kind of special occasion.”
