With just over a week to go before their first pre-season game at home to Scottish Premiership Division One side Currie, Otley have announced their second batch of signings.

They include Old Crossleyans’ Kiwi open-side flanker Daniel Temm, Wharfedale centre Jack Mackie and Yarnbury back row or second row Adam Malthouse.

Malthouse, like Mackie, has represented Yorkshire under-20s.

Jon Brooksby, a centre or full back from Sheffield Tigers, who has experience with Otley Saracens, Selkirk second row Simon Willett and former Keighley Cougars Academy player Toby Williams have also been recruited.

Mackie, who made his debut for Aireborough in 2008, scored a try on his first-team debut for Wharfedale against Stourbridge in January, 2009.

Brooksby, from Barnsley, is a former pupil at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield and has played for Yorkshire at age-group level.

Willet, 25, is 6ft 5in and made his debut for Duns when he was only 15 while still a pupil at Berwickshire High School.

He played for Edinburgh Academicals and also fitted in two spells of rugby in New Zealand firstly with the Whakatane club in the Bay of Plenty province, and secondly with Harbour Rugby Club in Dunedin, Otago.

Skipton-based Williams is a blind-side or tight-head prop who went to York City Knights before joining Hunslet Hawks.

Otley’s director of rugby Gary Walker, who has elected to the club's management committee, said: “A number of the highly successful Otley Colts have also joined the squad, so look out for these exciting young players over the first few months of the season, and as university gets in to full swing.

“We have assessed other players at coaching sessions, and there will be further announcements before the first league game on August27.

"I will be confirming next week the names of the Leeds Carnegie players who we will be welcoming back to Otley. Suffice to say at this stage they will be familiar to all at the club!”

It has also been announced that the annual fixture between Otley and Bradford & Bingley, for the Granville Clark Memorial Trophy, will be played on December 31 at Wagon Lane.

The fixture will be played annually over the New Year holidays and will rotate between the two clubs.

The trophy is named after Granville Clark, who played for both clubs in the late 1970s and 1980s before he passed away from cancer in his mid-30s, almost a year to the day after playing his last match for Otley Saracens at Rotherham.

A collection or small entrance fee will be charged at the match, with all proceeds going to Manorlands Hospice, Keighley.

Meanwhile, Adam Blades has been named as Otley’s first-team captain.

The 29-year-old Yorkshire and England Counties front-rower will hope to lead the Cross Greeners back into National League One at the first attempt.

A club statement announced: “Adam has been a consistent performer over the past two seasons and has helped many of the younger players with their transition to National League rugby and will bring a wealth of experience to the role.”

Blades joined Otley for the start of the 2009-10 season, having previously been at Huddersfield and, for six seasons, at Halifax.

The former Mirfield Free Grammar School captain is steeped in sport, having earned a PE degree at Leeds Met and working for Leeds Carnegie as a rugby development officer.

He takes over the captaincy from Jamie Sutton, who has moved to the Midlands and joined Stourbridge.
