Wharfedale 30 Blackheath 17

Wharfedale's sad performance at Stourbridge in their previous National Two outing was little more than an uncomfortable memory after this competent display deservedly completed the double over Blackheath.

The visitors played a full part in an exciting, fullblooded match.

However, while they achieved at least parity in feisty forward encounters, they could not match the inventiveness of the Dalesmen's backs, whose speed produced two sparkling tries and regularly threatened more.

While centres Chris Malherbe (17 minutes) and Mark Bedworth (38) received suitable acclaim for swerving runs to the Blackheath posts, the biggest cheer from home fans was for the Greens' third touch-down, on 61 minutes, which effectively sealed the victory.

Winger Andy Hodgson's dash to the line was no more than five metres - but it was a flash of the 'Hodge' of old.

Bedworth completed a 20-point personal haul with his third penalty eight minutes later.
