A rugby team who currently have no name will hold their third training session in Bingley next Saturday.

The session for people with learning disabilities will be held at Bradford & Bingley RFC’s Wagon Lane ground (11am-1pm).

RFU coach Hamish Pratt said: “Bradford & Bingley have kindly offered our players a special one-year membership for only £5.

“This gives each player a players’ membership card, full insurance and ensures that they are registered with the RFU.

“Players should bring their £5 and a passport-sized photo to go with their card.

“The idea of the sessions is to get fit and have some fun, both with myself and my fellow RFU coach Neil Spence.

“And there is the added benefit for the players of staying at the ground, having a drink and watching the Bradford & Bingley v Harrogate first-team match, which kicks off at 2.15pm.”

The idea of a rugby team for adults with learning disabilities started last October when a student, Anthony Brooke, complained bitterly that he was allowed to watch rugby, and even be a water-carrier, but not play.

Unable to find a suitable rugby team to join, Anthony contacted West Yorkshire disability development officer James Brown, who supplied Anthony with contact details for both rugby union and rugby league representatives.

RFU development officer Pratt stepped forward, and 17 players responded to a player appeal with a view to finding enough people to possibly enter a summer tag tournament.

There is now a long-term plan to promote, support and encourage adults with learning disabilities to enjoy regular rugby training and participate in an able-body summer tournament in 2010.
