Baildon 18, Aireborough 24

Baildon may have lost two of their first three matches in Yorkshire Division Three but Carlos Hassan still has lofty ambitions for his charges.

Speaking after their derby defeat at home to Aireborough, player-coach Hassan said: “I am targeting a place in the top six.”

Still adjusting to life at Jenny Lane after his disappointing exit from Wagon Lane at the end of last season, Hassan said: “I was going to pack in but Phil Wilson (Baildon’s rugby chairman) had put some feelers out and I had seen the club’s advert in the T&A.

“Our guys don’t get paid for playing so I cannot order players to train – but I can apply controlled pressure.

“And we cannot expect not to be at training on Tuesdays and Thursdays and expect everything to click on Saturdays. It doesn’t work like that and our set-pieces were terrible against Aireborough.”

Hassan was not expecting to have to buy another pair of boots but the 37-year-old lasted for 71 minutes yesterday before his hamstring went.

He explained: “You need some experience out on the pitch alongside Mark Coultas at fly half and some of the older lads in the pack.”

Aire had lost their first two matches but were deserving winners here.

Their second-row Richard Fall, who is 40 in January, said: “It was a typical derby played with spirit and passion – and the odd bit of niggle. I just wish it hadn’t been quite so hot!”

Baildon went 12-0 behind in ten minutes to tries by full back James Druce and flanker Adam Greenwood, James Druce adding a conversion.

Centre Mark Druce added three more penalties but Baildon replied with tries by left winger Richard Kingham and flanker Alistair Beaumont.

Scrum half James Dawson (try) and full back Nick Lister (penalty) got Baildon’s points in the second half, Mark Druce adding another penalty for the visitors.
