Old Otliensians 19, Ilkley Seconds 25

THIS victory by Ilkley Seconds in the Spray Plant (UK) Ltd Aire-Wharfe Cup final means that all three of their senior teams have won silverware this season.

The first team clinched the SSE North One East title, while the thirds were champions of the Aire-Wharfe West District Merit Table.

League-wise, Ilkley Seconds finished a creditable sixth in the Yorkshire Premiership Merit competition but this was a soggy finale to their season thanks to a massive deluge at Chaffers Field.

Skipper Chris Chapman was only able to raise the Aire-Wharfe Cup high after a tense derby that was full of blood and guts.

The Dalesmen started like a train, with Andy Malley and Dan Nolan scoring in the same corner within five minutes of the kick-off.

However, the hosts then found a way to combat Ilkley's attacks in the backs and the back row.

But with Jon Pickersgill and Will Davies dominating the line-out for Ilkley, Ensians were pinned in their own half and young Pickersgill got the third Ilkley try after half an hour to make it 15-0.

Charles Morgan added a penalty and the Ilkley supporters relaxed – but not for long.

Slack tackling let elusive Otliensians scrum half Rob Lofthouse in for a try, long-serving full back Kristian Keinhorst converting to make it 18-7 at half-time.

With Ensians now playing to their favourite corner, the quality of Ilkley's kicking and passing deserted them.

And Will Marlow's super try for Ilkley, converted by Eddie Brown, only spurred Otliensians on.

Lock Ali Campbell scored on the hour to make it 25-12 and, although Pickersgill was held up over the home line, Ensians were awarded a penalty try, which Keinhorst converted, with five minutes to go.

However, somehow Ilkley held on as darkness fell to complete that club treble.
