SSE Yorkshire Division Three

Old Grovians 37

Rotherham Phoenix 36

OLD Grovians won a game of 73 points, six yellow cards and one red by a point but it wasn't quite that close as the visitors scored a late penalty try that triggered the dismissal of the home side's Adam Weaving for dissent against the decision.

Phoenix's pack held sway on a day when the visitors dominated possession but a penalty count of 19-7 in their favour proved another talking point.

Joe Sowden's second-minute try put the leaders ahead and it was 10-0 when Anthony Griffin gathered a kick ahead in the 11th minute, but Rotherham made it 10-10 with a penalty and their first penalty try, which the home side questioned.

However, Grovians led 17-13 at half-time thanks to Aaron Magee's converted try, Phoenix replying with a penalty.

Christian Baines gave the hosts their bonus-point try early in the second half but Rotherham hit back to 22-20.

A fumble near the visitors' line gave Nathan Barr his first try for Grovians but with three home players in the bin, Phoenix got a pushover try to make it 29-25.

It became worse when the referee sin-binned a Phoenix player for dissent – meaning four were in the bin – when Magee was on his way to the try-line but he was not to be denied a few minutes later.

Another home sin-binning gave Phoenix the chance to score another penalty try but Weaving strongly queried the decision and was sent off. However, the home side held on for the win.
