Baildon 10, Yarnbury 34

The old adage that luck doesn’t go your way when you’re struggling at the bottom was never more evident as Baildon sank to their tenth consecutive league defeat in SSE Yorkshire Division Two at Jenny Lane.

Leading 10-8 at the break through a Hayden Lister try and Jarrod Huss conversion and penalty, the hosts went behind early in the second half when Marcus Dracup clearly grounded the ball in his own in-goal area after a Huss clearance kick had been charged down, only for referee Carl Walsh to award a try to Yarnbury after the ball slipped from the centre’s grasp and was pounced on by a visiting player.

What followed was an all-too-familiar second-half capitulation by Baildon, who had defended bravely and had played some adventurous rugby in the first half but once again ran out of gas in the final stanza to ship a further three tries.

The ever-improving Jenny Laners have a welcome break from league rugby next week, which will give them chance to regroup before they visit Barnsley on Saturday, November 23.

The break has definitely come at the right time for Old Grovians in SSE Yorkshire Division Three.

They lost 39-5 at Goole, who Grovians’ director of rugby called “the best side we have played this season in the league”.

He added: “They are well organised and it was a case of damage limitation after half-time, when we trailed 17-0.

“No 8 Charles Medley and back-rower Pat Guthrie were our best players, and they were both playing for the first time since the Bramley Phoenix match, but ideally I would have given Charles another week off so the break now is ideal.”
