Baildon 20 Leeds Medics and Dentists 9

Despite being 9-3 adrift with just 11 minutes left, Baildon refused to surrender an unbeaten home record which now stretches back to October 2011.

Playing possibly his last game before the birth of his first child, Marcus Dracup typified the defensive qualities which has given the Jenny Laners the Yorkshire Silver Trophy, RFU Junior Vase and transformed them from also-rans to promotion candidates in just two years.

The 28-year-old centre organised the midfield defence superbly and nullified a lively Leeds Medics back line which enjoyed plenty of possession but never seriously threatened the home side’s line.

Head coach Dave Duxbury’s decision to freshen up the side between the 53rd and 58th minute proved crucial, with all five replacements making an immediate impact on the game which was beginning to slip away from his side.

A penalty from the boot of replacement full back Jarrod Huss reduced the arrears to 6-3 on 63 minutes but the visitors restored their six-point lead just four minutes later after their scrum half was adjudged to have been obstructed at the scrum.

As the game approached the final ten minutes Dracup’s influence on the game began to tell and it was his ability to turn the ball over in the tackle, coupled with tremendous work rate and excellent decision-making, which gave his side the platform to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Stand-off Jake Duxbury crossed from close-range on 71 minutes after managing to get outside his man and squeeze over just to the right of the posts to give Huss an easy conversion which put the Jenny Laners in front for the first time in the game.

The Kiwi then increased the lead with a well-struck penalty on 76 minutes and rounded off an impressive 20-minute appearance on the stroke of full-time after getting himself on the end of some fine handling to accept a try-scoring pass from winger Richard Kingham.

Huss improved his own try to give his side a slightly flattering scoreline but a deserved victory which puts Baildon in third place, one point behind second-placed Goole but with a game in hand.
