Rugby Lions 11 Cleckheaton 6

The long trip to Web Ellis Road turned out to be a character-building exercise for the determined Cleckheaton side.

Lions, with a home record of played five, won five and a points average in excess of 30 per match, were determined to retain their top-of-the-table position. However, they had not taken into account visitors who are capable of beating the best on their day.

A scoreless first half disguised a great deal of endeavour from both sides and a strong, blustery wind made it difficult to carry out their pre-set game-plan. Lions took the lead four minutes into the second period with a drop goal from stand-off Peter Glackin.

Two minutes later, the lead was extended when winger Adrian Hales finished off a good piece of handling with a try. James Hawken missed the conversion.

Cleckheaton showed great resolve and their defensive structure kept the Lions at bay.

Two penalties from Chris Quinn took Cleck into bonus point territory as the visitors eyed victory.

But Lions matched their intensity and extended their lead when Hawken kicked his first penalty.

Cleckheaton were always in with a chance of a win and matched their confident opponents for determination and resolve.

The final minutes were fought out in midfield as the leaders were content to keep the ball and deny Cleck any further chances.
