Old Grovians 56, Wetherby 0

Old Grovians made a memorable debut yesterday at their Elm Tree Farm ground across the road from Woodhouse Grove School.

Grove were up for the SSE Yorkshire Division Four game from the start, Matt Worrall returning the kick-off with interest to set the backs free and only a loose pass prevented an immediate score.

However, that was as good as it got for 25 minutes as Grove found themselves on the wrong side of the referee and conceded 17 penalties in the first half.

Ben Brown helped to settle the nerves by slotting a penalty for Grove to give them the lead, and this was followed by a try by Aaron Magee.

Soon after, they scored another try. A set move from a line-out saw the forwards make good yards up the middle before the powerful Gaz Phillips burst through to make it 18-0 at half-time, the tally being made up by a second penalty and a conversion.

Grove now had a their tails up and McGee soon added his second, and Joel Bradley shot through a gap to extend the score to 30-0.

It did not take long before Magee added his third and Anthony Griffin latched onto a kick ahead to dive over the line.

With Grovians now ringing the changes, the game inevitably became scrappy and disjointed, but the large crowd that ventured down seemed to enjoy the entertainment on show.

It was left to Magee to wrap the proceedings up with his fourth try of the game with an electric break in the centre of midfield before rounding the full back and just leaving Weaving enough time to slot the conversion from the touchline.

A red-letter day for Grovians was added to when the result came through from their first ever second team game across the road against Cleckheaton Fourths - a 34-29 victory.
