CENTRE Liam Stead posted two touchdowns as Brighouse Rangers pulled off a surprise 28-22 success against red-hot favourites Ovenden in the Pennine League's Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy final at Odsal Stadium.

Rangers suffered a blow when influential half-back Troy Ambler was ruled out with a head injury, but they took an early lead when scum half Jamie Barraclough crossed for a touchdown that he converted himself.

Ovenden, who had won Division One title by remaining undefeated, soon levelled matters and went into the interval 10-8 up after Barraclough had added a penalty.

In the second stanza, Brighouse increased the tempo, which resulted in Stead sprinting down the stand side to cross the whitewash, soon followed by hooker Andy Esmond and full back Karl Frankland.

The Rangers pack, with prop Lee Robson plus 17-year-old twins Matty and Ronnie Bailey to the fore, tamed the Halifax based six to set up the chance for wingman Joe Campbell to scorch down the flanks for an absolute belter, and it was fitting that Stead should put the result beyond doubt when he evaded the Ovenden full back to claim the winner.

Odsal Sedbergh shared the spoils with a 26-26 draw at Skirlaugh Bulls in Yorkshire Men's Division One.

Three-quarters Rob Priestley and Luke Dawson crossed to give Sedge a slender 12-10 half-time lead, and it looked like both points were in the bag when Olly Priestley crossed for a brace on the restart.

The hosts roared back, however, before hooker Rob Booth produced his usual trademark effort by picking up from acting half to burrow over from short range.

Both Bradford Dudley Hill and West Bowling came a cropper on their Kingstone Press National Conference League travels.

Hill appeared to be on course for a Division Two win when they led 18-14 at Wigan St Judes before they had three players sent off.

The result was inevitable from then on in as Judes scored 16 points without reply to register a 30-18 success.

Anthony Huby, Damian Smith and Tony Lawton scored Hill's touchdowns, with Simon Sewell on target with the conversions.

In Division Three, West Bowling lost 37-28 at Woolston Rovers.

Bowling rallied from a 20-6 deficit to narrow the gap to 28-22, following tries from stand-off Liam Coe, second-row forward Olly Bartle, hooker Danny Halmshaw and wingman Bob Young, but the Warrington side weathered the storm to run out worthy winners.
