VICTORIA Rangers and Queensbury have both won through to the second round of the Pennine President's Cup following convincing victories.

Rangers' defence was on top form from the start at Mirfield Stags, which provided the platform for centre Michael Dixon to cross on the quarter-hour mark.

Talisman Isaac Brown then raced 40 metres to score under the sticks, leaving Hayden Sugden with an easy conversion, before the hosts reduced the arrears to 10-4 on the stroke of half-time.

Brown bagged his brace following a smart runaround with Kyle Hunt – and it was all over bar the shouting when man of the match Carl McGuigan made the whitewash for another try, converted by Sugden, who also landed a late penalty in the 24-14 tally.

Queensbury made short shrift of visitors New Earswick All Blacks in a seven-try 42-12 romp, led by playmakers Steven Nagy and Joe Flanagan.

The York side's early lead was quickly cancelled out when wingman Scott Swann hit the chalk, soon followed by a powerful effort from packman Tom Hainsworth.

Prop Dan Hawksworth charged under the uprights to put Bury in charge at 16-6 at the break – and the visitors' woes increased when Swann claimed his brace after the restart.

Fiery wingman John Farr then showed a clean pair of heels with two sharp touchdowns, before Hainsworth brought the house down when he produced an unstoppable burst to end the tie.

Meanwhile, West Bowling bowed out of the BARLA Yorkshire Cup after a 32-18 opening-round defeat at Hull's Three Tuns.

Bowling wingman James Crabb got the scoreboard rolling with a try in the corner against a side boosted by the addition of a large number of West Hull Conference players. A neat offload from prop Chris Anderson also enabled Robert Young to touch down.

Loose forward Richard Lumb forced his way to the chalk after a long period of pressure and Bowling fully merited the 14-14 interval scoreline.

But the second-half sin-binning of playmaker Liam Coe put the skids under Bowling's chances and the hosts took the opportunity to put the tie beyond reach, wingman Jake Green posting a consolation effort at the close.

Wyke substitute Scott Watson proved the match-winner in their 24-22 success at Greetland All Rounders in Division Two of the Pennine League.

The black and whites were good value for their 6-0 first-half total following a try from centre Gavin Mezals, converted by Brad Ellis.

It was then tit for tat in the second stanza, with touchdowns from forwards Ian Wormald and Simon Owen keeping Wyke in the chase until the lively Watson spotted a hole to race under the sticks for the winner.

Queensbury A won their Division Three West derby 12-6 at West Bowling A.

Karl Robinson crossed for Bowling, with Harry Williams adding the extras. Angelo Ricci and Cameron Parry replied for the visitors.
