VICTORIA Rangers paid the price for a slow start in their 32-24 Division One defeat at Dalton.

The journey to Barrow is the longest trip in the Pennine League programme and it clearly took its toll as the Vics suffered a disastrous opening quarter, after which they were 18-0 in arrears.

They managed to regain some of the initiative shortly before the interval when prop forward Johnny Fawthrop broke the line to power under the uprights, leaving stand-off Hayden Sugden to tag on the extras.

Dalton posted another converted effort on the restart but Rangers stuck to their task with a cracker of a try from hooker Isaac Brown, which Sugden converted.

Sugden scored the best touchdown of the game shortly afterwards when he danced around five defenders to plant the ball under the posts and add the extras himself.

A huge 15-4 penalty count against the Vics benefited the hosts' cause, however, and they went into the last five minutes 32-18 up.

But Rangers had the final say when prop Benoit Rogers made the chalk, allowing Sugden the chance to land his fourth conversion.

In the revamped Championship Division One, Odsal Sedbergh are rooted to the bottom following their 20-4 home loss against St Joseph's.

And an under-strength Wyke went down 26-10 in the Division Two relegation battle at Kellingley Welfare.

Wyke coach Warren Pitman explained: "A lack of enthusiasm and aggression saw us go 18-0 down without having touched the ball.

"We brought our play-maker Sean Godfrey off the bench and started to look the better team until a cheap intercept took them out of reach."

The black and whites' tries came from wingman Brett Grey, in the corner, and a blockbuster from prop Ian Wormald under the uprights.

Wibsey Warriors came away from Shaw Cross Sharks with three touchdowns to their name in a 38-14 loss.

Matt Cumberworth, Paul Jennings and Nick Heap made the whitewash, one of which was converted by Steve Redman.

In Division Three, Clayton lost 42-6 at runaway leaders Stanningley.
