A drop goal three minutes from time helped Batley Boys grab a 21-20 success in the opening round of the BARLA National Cup at Queensbury.

Bury looked to be in the box seat when they raced into a 20-6 interval lead following touchdowns from Dan Clark, Callum Murgatroyd, Ash Ryan and Tom Hainsworth.

The second stanza, however, was dominated by the visitors, with outstanding hooker Adam Bingham landing the all-important one-pointer.

West Bowling fell to a surprise 20-12 defeat at Knottingley Rockware in the Pennine League Championship Division to fall three points behind leaders Keighley, who enjoyed a comfortable 28-6 away at King Cross Park.

An out-of-sorts Bowling made far too many mistakes but second-row forward Richard Lumb continued his fine form with a brace, both converted by scrum half Ben Heald. Long-serving packman Sha Basha was West’s best on a frustrating day.

Odsal Sedbergh keep second spot in Division Three following a hard-earned 16-6 home success over Greetland All Rounders.

Sedge had only a Sam Greenwood try on the board in the first half, the sides changing nds at 4-4.

They upped their game on the restart, though, and crucial touchdowns from outstanding hooker Robert Booth and three-quarter Andy Gabriel paved the way to victory.

Undercliffe Wildboars kept their Division Four promotion aspirations on course with a 36-20 home win over Kellingley.

The Wildboars opened the scoring when loose forward Matt Pitman scored out wide, with stand-off Aidan Scully converting.

Kellingley hit back to make it 6-6 before new signing Carl McGinwein came off the bench to cross in the corner.

The Welfaremen levelled matters once more at 10-10 before makeshift centre Willy Woodhead deftly kicked ahead for Gavin Jarvis to collect and touch down and put the Wildboars in front 14-10 at the break.

A superb long-range hat-trick from hooker Isaac Brown was the jewel in the crown in the second stanza as Undercliffe stamped their authority on the game, centre Martin Southwell closing out the match with simple try from acting half.
