West Bowling 60, Moorends Thorne Marauders 0

Full back Gareth Cullington helped himself to four tries and centre Jack Dawson posted a hat-trick as West Bowling warmed up for their Hamuel Reichenbacher Yorkshire Cup semi-final against Nevison Leap with a sizzling Pennine League Championship Division display against Moorends Thorne Marauders at Emsleys Rec.

It was a gloomy start for the visitors as wingman Jamie Steward collected out wide and sprinted down the touchline to cut inside and plant the ball under the posts.

And Moorends were soon back on the rack when Cullington supported a break from scrum half Ben Heald to outpace their ponderous defence.

Dawson used his superior upper body strength to hand off three defenders on a charge to the corner and then ran over the Marauders full back to claim his brace.

Leaders Bowling had too much pace and power for their shell-shocked opponents, which was once again clearly evident when Adam Reardon galloped down the middle from within his own 20-metre line and served Cullington with his second try on a plate.

The burly centre then turned from provider to poacher as he ran across the Moorends rear-guard to pick his spot, leaving Heald to add a fifth conversion for a 34-0 interval lead.

The carnage continued on the restart when Dawson went in for his trio after a simple passing move, before Heald accepted a gift when the Marauders dropped the ball attempting to clear their line.

Cullington, who was now a permanent fixture in the back line, was the first to react to a ricochet for his third score and then finished off a fine afternoon’s work by supporting a huge plunge from substitute forward Liam Brown for his fourth.

New signing Nathan Kitson dovetailed superbly into the loose-forward berth and was clearly on the same hymn sheet as his new colleagues when the first penalty of the game was awarded for offside in the 70th minute. He took the tap-and-run to spot a gap for a debut try as the scoreboard ran out of numbers.

Bowling marksman Heald added three more conversions to his tally before the hosts, with pack leader Richard Lumb plus partners Chris Anderson and Kieran McAvoy to the fore, snuffed out a late Moorends rally to ensure they returned home with a nil return.
