Wibsey Warriors 38, Dewsbury Moor 12

Wibsey Warriors posted four touchdowns in a second-half masterclass despite having a man sent off in their Pennine League Premier Division clash with Dewsbury Moor at Northfield Road.

The Warriors should have scored following a touchline burst from full back Mike Derrick, which saw the final pass go to ground, but they soon hit the front when second-row forward Mark Kendall strode through some sloppy tackling.

The visitors quickly replied with a tap-and-run penalty that enabled loose forward Tony Boardman to spot a gap at the side of the posts, leaving prop Andy Robinson a simple conversion. The lively Derrick joined the attack to pick up and burrow over at the ruck and scrum half Simon Sewell made no mistake with the extras as the hosts replied in kind.

This stung the Dewsbury side, who are still looking for their first league point, into a fierce response as the tackles flew in thick and fast.

Wibsey stuck to their task and wingman Jamie Brentley was bundled into touch following a sparkling 30-metre touchline dash.

Substitute Kyle Carter then reached out for the chalk for another converted effort manufactured by a power break from prop Chris Vogel.

The half concluded with a fiery exchange of fisticuffs which saw Kendall and opposite number Ben Hardacre dispatched to the sin bin.

Further misfortune stuck the hosts when Brentley was sent off on the restart for comments made to the referee. At 16-6, the question was whether mid-table Wibsey had enough points on the board.

Stand-off Ryan Smith threaded a clever grubber through the defence but the resulting touchdown from Carter was ruled out for a double movement.

The answer eventually came when solid hard graft from forwards Mike Kite and Mike Darragh set the platform for a lightning raid and fast hands saw centre Nick Walker produce a peach of a pass to send wingman James Rodger over, with Sewell’s boot again on target.

The points were effectively in the bag when Carter repeated his earlier effort and the visitors handed the Warriors a gift when they dropped the ball trying to clear their line, leaving Rodger to collect his brace.

Smith took advantage of tired Moor legs to ghost over for the hosts’ final try, leaving Sewell to collect his fifth conversion of the game.

But Smith then unfortunately blotted his copybook when his pass was intercepted by wingman Aaron Haywood and Robinson added the extras for a consolation effort at the final whistle.
