The Cougars’ achievement in winning the Championship One Grand Final has been hailed in the House of Commons by local MP Kris Hopkins.
Speaking during business questions, Hopkins told the House – to the amusement of Welsh members – that England’s performances in the World Cup had meant that “many of us have struggled to enjoy the rugby down under in recent weeks”.
But he added: “In Yorkshire, not only do we have the Leeds Rhinos – who have thrashed Lancastrian opposition – but the Cougars have become the Championship One Grand Final champions.”
Hopkins asked Sir George Young, the Leader of the Commons: “May we have a statement heralding their success please?”
Responding, Sir George signaled his thanks to the Keighley and Ilkley MP for his question but was unable to confirm that a minister would come to the despatch box to make such a statement.
