CAMPION missed out on the chance to go top of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division last night after drawing 0-0 at home to Tadcaster Albion.

It had been a fine start to the season for the Red and Blacks, who won their opening four league games following promotion.

But a surprise 2-1 defeat at Silsden was followed by a 6-0 thumping at Whickham in the FA Cup, with this now making it three games without a win, a rare thing for the Bradford side, who won a treble last season.

They were unlucky not to beat Tadcaster and take over from Knaresborough Town at the summit though.

Aidan Kirby’s early strike was tipped just wide before he shot just over.

Taddy were proving to be a threat from set-pieces, but Campion held firm, and came close again themselves when Nicky Boshell just failed to connect with Emmerson Cox’s ball into the box.

The visitors saw a cross shot go agonisingly wide just before half-time, before Kirby came close to opening the scoring with an audacious acrobatic effort midway through the second half.

Taddy came inches from sliding home a later winner, while Paddy Sykes missed a gilt-edged headed opportunity in the dying moments, with both sides having to settle for a share of the spoils.

A depleted Guiseley side suffered a bruising 3-0 defeat at Marine in an FA Cup first qualifying round replay in midweek.

The Lions, who have just signed former Bradford City midfielder Danny Devine, went behind to an early goal, before conceding twice in the second half.

To make matters worse, Guiseley had Tom Pratt sent off for a straight red card after a poorly-timed late challenge with 20 minutes to go.

With that defeat, only Farsley Celtic, Bradford (Park Avenue) and Albion Sports remain in the FA Cup of our non-league teams.

Farsley’s focus was on National League North action in midweek though, with Clayton Donaldson’s side suffering an ugly 4-0 defeat away to Blyth Spartans.
