THE Cobbydalers’ third meeting of the season with near neighbours Padiham last Wednesday was certainly incident packed.

The Lancashire outfit won it 5-1 after banging in three goals inside the last ten minutes as the visitors ended the game with eight men after two dismissals, one of which was the goalkeeper, and an injury.

Silsden had won the first clash, the reverse league fixture, but Padiham redressed the balance by knocking the Cobbydalers out of the FA Cup and they claimed the bragging rights for the season with the big midweek win at their YESSS Electrical Arena.

Spokesman Jim Rosser said, “I think eventful is the word. We have got Joe Taylor playing in goal, he’s on loan from Fleetwood Town and Ryan (Haigh, manager) brought him in because Danny Thorpe has had an operation and could be out for months.

“Just ten minutes into the game Joe ran out of his area to challenge and collided with the forward. Their player just ran into our keeper really and I think it was a harsh red card.

“Oliver Hunter went on as substitute and he went in goal, they scored from the resulting free kick but Oliver – who is a defender – did well overall. We defended well, we had to, but obviously we were up against it from then on.

“In my opinion the referee was poor but it was the same for both teams.”

That was the story of the first half but the sub plot was still developing as Silsden, who signed two new players, from Padiham, in the days before the game refused to crumble under the pressure.

Rosser added, “”It was a bit odd really because one of the lads we got from them, who played against their old club straight away, Wayne Morrison, was signed on for their reserves and had scored 14 goals but wasn’t signed on for Padiham’s first team.

“I think some of their committee were a bit surprised by that. Padiham went two up but Andy Lee made it 2-1 and we were still in it then and until ten minutes from time.

“We’ve got a lad in from Settle, Elliot Firth, and he’s a very good player. He’s done well at the back but he twisted his ankle and had to be carried off, Ryan had used all his subs by then.

“Then another of the new signings, Charles Collinge, who had actually played some good football and showed a lot of promise, gave a penalty away in the last minute and got a second yellow card.

“Nathan Eagan got two of their goals and he’s ex-Silsden. It was one of those games.”
