SAM Thorpe 88th-minute penalty made Drighlington's 3-2 defeat at Alwoodley seem closer than it was in the Yorkshire Amateur League Premier Division.

However, the visitors played well and looked like a top-half team against 100 per centers Alwoodley, with Harvey Booth making it 1-1 for Drig in the 25th minute.

Defending champions Farsley Celtic Juniors were greatly improved on the previous week and defeated visitors Ealandians 2-0, although they had to wait until the 70th and 88th minutes for the goals.

The first was created by Louis Surtees and netted by Said Osman, and the second came as a result of good work by Joe Firth, with Osman setting up Surtees.

Reluctant stand-in striker Kristian Dacre might be having second thoughts after scoring all of the first-half goals as Grangefield Old Boys led 4-0, but visitors Beeston Juniors hit back in the seocnd half, going down 5-3 in an entertaining clash.

Beeston's fitness told in the second half as they pulled it back to 4-3, only for Shane Gaunt to break their hearts with his first goal for the Old Boys in the 85th minute.

Grangefield's man of the match was James Kemp, with assists coming from Rhys Moore (3) and Rhys O'Hare (2).

Former Spen Valley League club Athletico are off the mark after a 3-3 draw at Stanningley Old Boys, who thus drew for the second time, but Athletico would probably have won were it not for two errors from their stand-in keeper.

Mohammed Qasim made it 1-1 for Athletico in the first half and Shamraj Hussain gave them the lead in the 62nd minute but they needed a superb late strike from the latter to gain a point.

Jimmy Halliday (2) and Joel Snape were on target for Stanningley, whose secretary Dan Holmes said: "We had a bare 11 players but the 11 that played put in 100 per cent against a talented footballing team.

"This was a much better performance than the previous week against Grangefield and only a late 'worldy' strike denied us the three points."

In the Championship Division, much-changed Gildersome Spurs Old Boys won 6-3 at Shire Academics, capitalising on five errors to lead 5-0 at the interval.

Gildersome's scorers were Johnny Hunt (2), Danny Phillips (2), Ben Keedy and George Taylor.

Below-par St Bede's won 3-2 at home to Collingham Juniors Old Boys but still lead the table with a 100 per cent record.

Bede's broke the deadlock in the first half thanks to Nick Scullion's top-corner finish after latching on to a through ball from Adeeb Jawad, but it needed two quality saves from Dan Lynas to maintain that margin up to half-time.

Ty Akram's penalty-area mistake gifted Collingham an equaliser but luck was on Jawad's side as he made it 2-1 and, after Jawad and Scullion had missed presentable chances, man of the match Sam Marshall beat three men and hit a screamer into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.

Two minutes later, Bede's gave away a penalty to concede again, and they needed more saves from Lynas in a backs-to-the-wall display to get the points.

Calverley United have found Thornesians to be a bogey team in recent seasons, but won 4-1 there after giving debuts to Ben Cook, Matty Wilson and Joe Rothwell, Sam Warthen and Jack Headley also making their first-team debuts after being promoted from their newly-formed reserve team.

Calverley took the lead through a Cook header from a corner, and could easily have added a second before Thorne levelled.

However, two quick goals from Wilson put Calverley in control, and he later completed his hat-trick.

In Division One, Idle's first home game of the season ended in an 8-1 victory over Alwoodley Reserves.

It was only 2-1 at half-time, however, before the hosts ran away with it, goals coming from Aaron Irving (3), Tom Simonett (2), Adam Medley, Ryan Mitchell and substitute James Royal, although Marcus Strudwick was man of the match.

Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves went down 8-3 at Leeds City Old Boys, Alistair Lewis bagging six. Reece Cunningham, Sam Ford and Michael Lofthouse netted for Farsley.

League newcomers Girlington met a side in excellent form in Division Two, going down 7-0 at home to Garforth Crusaders, while Fairbank United drew 4-4 at home to Woodkirk Valley.

United's secretary Akif Waseem said: "In a game played in sunshine, hailstones, light and heavy rain, both teams put in an excellent shift, despite the unsettled weather.

"Fairbank may have created more chances, but Woodkirk were clinical when required and, while both teams will be kicking themselves at not securing the three points, both walked away with a draw.

"It was an excellent game, played with the right attitude from both teams. We look forward to playing Woodkirk again later in the season."

Irfan Khan's cross caused a Woodkirk defender to head past his keeper to make it 1-1, and United went in front via a 30-yard Zak Javed effort.

Woodkirk went into a 4-2 lead, aided by a Shazah Ahmed own goal, but Fairbank levelled via a 40-yard Asim Hussain daisy-cutter and a mesmerising Khan run.

In Division Four, Prospect picked up their first league point in a 2-2 draw against Leeds City Old Boys Thirds, Prospect's goals coming from Adam Shefta and Stephen Thwaites, while Gildersome Spurs Old Boys Reserves defeated Beeston Juniors Reserves 5-2, courtesy of Lucas Scott (2), Zac Yeoman, Luke Webster and Sam Innes.

Drighlington Reserves won 6-1 at Dewsbury Rangers Reserves thanks to Matty Roller (2), Ryan Rhodes (2), Andy Thompson and Kieron Boulton.

In Division Five, Tyersal Reserves have a 100 per cent record after two games, beating Thornesians III 6-3, with skipper Chris Gibbon (3), Nick Leach (2) and Luke Dyson on target.
