SIX goals from Hannah Campbell saw Bradford City Women start their County Cup defence with an 8-0 win.

Debutants and fringe players impressed in a rotated XI at Ossett Albion but it was Campbell who stole the show.

Two goals before the break and four after it – including three in the space of six minutes – saw her scoop the player of the match award, with Zoe Roberts and Jade Brindle adding the other two.

Player-manager Charlotte Stuart opted to watch this one from the dugout and she was more than impressed.

"There could have been more goals from the chances we created but the Ossett goalkeeper made some fantastic saves," said Stuart.

"We played some great football which was enjoyable to watch, so I was very pleased with the performance."

Campbell's poaching saw her break the deadlock after just 14 minutes and her second goal soon followed.

Roberts made it three then Brindle four – but both goals came at the expense of Lucy Sowerby.

The striker rolled her ankle, earning Roberts the chance to score from the spot, and Brindle was her replacement as Sowerby was carried off and taken to hospital.

Stuart confirmed that Sowerby's injury is not as bad as first feared and said: "Lucy has strained her ligaments, so she will be out for at least a month. But it is better than our first thought of a break, so we are hoping for a speedy recovery."

The good news is that City have plenty of options in her absence, as Sunday's display showed.

Recent loan signing Rachel Newborough and teenager Kirstie Hunt both looked comfortable and composed – while the third and final debutant, Caroline Madina, assisted goal number eight from midfield.

Campbell latched on to her through-ball and finished neatly to complete her double hat-trick, having lurked around the six-yard box and notched three goals already in the half.

Stuart said: "The debutants made great accounts of themselves. Bringing some of our reserve players into the first-team squad gave them a good opportunity to display their ability too and they certainly did that.

"The selection headache is a great problem to have. We have a huge game on Sunday at Stoke and to have strength and depth in the squad is a big bonus."
