DRIGHLINGTON bowed out 6-2 at Huddersfield Amateur in the West Riding County FA Challenge Trophy quarter-finals to bring an end to an exceptional journey for the young side.

Drig led after just 90 seconds when Mikey Durham latched on to a through-ball and fired home, before Matty Parker replied with an assured finish.

Two minutes later, Drighlington were back in front as Shane Sowden produced a cool finish. But Amateur came more into the game and added two goals in as many minutes to go in 3-2 up at the interval.

Within a minute of the restart, the visitors squandered a good chance when foiled by the Amateur keeper. This proved to be the turning point as the hosts rushed to the other end and equalised, with Parker going on to complete his hat-trick.

Drighlington manager Bob Greenwood has every right to be proud of his young team, who reached two quarter-finals this season and will surely be promoted to the Yorkshire Amateur League second tier.

Grangefield OB won 2-0 at Trinity OB in the Premier Division to end a five-match winless streak and an eight-season wait for a victory there.

After a goalless first half, the opening goal for Grangefield came when Matty Tomlinson won the ball on the edge of his own penalty area. He weaved his way well into the Trinity half and finished with a neat chip that left the onrushing Trinity keeper stranded.

The second goal was, in the words of the Grangefield manager, one of the best ever for his team. A crossfield pass, delivered over the top of the Trinity defence by Grant Jackson, split the defence and landed in a superb position for substitute Daniel Cuff to volley sweetly into the opposite corner of the net.

Grangefield are still seventh, with Trinity dropping to sixth with 12 points from 13 games. Chris Cairns' midfield trickery enabled him to be Grangefield's man of the match for the second week running.

Stanningley OB lost 4-3 at home to Alwoodley after a goalless first half.

Stanningley went two goals up as first a daisy-cutter somehow beat a shocked Alwoodley keeper, before the Alwoodley defence made simple yet drastic errors for the second.

James Turner reduced the arrears but James Allen immediately got the better of the Alwoodley defence to make it 3-1 in Stanningley's favour.

Yet Alwoodley dug in and their character enabled them to pull off an outstanding victory.

Geoff Clarkson made the score 3-2 after following up a Graham Shaw shot that was parried, then with seven minutes to go Shaw ran at the Stanningley defence and unleashed an unstoppable drive.

Finally the busy Clarkson kept cool as he stroked home the winning goal just before the final whistle, leaving Stanningley fourth with five wins and five defeats from ten games.

The towering Tom McKenna was man of the match for Alwoodley, who are third to bottom but have games in hand on teams around them.

Stanningley's scorers were Jimmy Halliday, Tom Stewart and Allen, with five regulars missing through injury and work.
