YOU know it is a strange old season when a match played on astroturf is abandoned after just 20 minutes.

Fairbank United hosted Slaithwaite in the County Trophy fourth round on Saturday before the weather eventually put paid to the game.

Slaithwaite settled quicker as Fairbank played into the wind and hail – but the opening goal in the sixth minute was farcical as Fairbank's goalkeeper stood static as the hail blew into his eyes, allowing the Slaithwaite forward to sidefoot the ball home from 18 yards.

The referee ordered both teams off in order for the weather to settle.

After a ten-minute break, the players were back on and Slaithwaite added a sensational second goal, a curling shot with the outside of the foot from 20 yards that flew into the top corner.

Fairbank rallied and got one back through Shoaib Hussain via an excellent one-touch move that was converted from close range.

The heavens then opened once more and the game was called off midway through the first half and will be replayed next week.

Premier Division action in the Yorkshire Amateur League saw Stanningley OB beat Farnley Sports 3-1.

Lee Ranson forced Farnley ahead with a well-placed volley but, shortly before half-time, Tom Stewart headed home an equaliser.

In the 75th minute, a long punt by the Stanningley keeper bounced and James Allen reacted quickly to sidefoot the ball home.

Stanningley clinched the contest when Stewart added his second after a scuffed shot found its way into the corner of the net.

In Division One, Drighlington thumped Wheelwright OB 5-1.

The goals for Drighlington were notched by leading scorer Shane Sowden, Joe Hirst, skipper Mikey Durham, Sam Thorpe and Brett Thompson.

St Bede's, meanwhile, suffered a 7-1 home defeat at the hands of in-form Garforth Rangers, with Tom Mozley providing the consolation goal.

Farnley Sports Res claimed a thrilling 4-3 home win over Shire Academics Reserves in Division Four, lifting them up to fifth and quite well placed to make a late promotion challenge.

Scorers for Farnley were the prolific Jordan Webb with a hat-trick and Jordan Woods, with Webb now on 15 goals from seven games.
